If you hunt & peck, there is U space out there, just not on Airbus flights. Personally, I believe setting an ExpertFlyer alert on an Airbus flight is futile. If others have datapoints in finding U on an Airbus prior to gate control when remaining F are provided as upgrades, I would be interested in hearing about them.

I had U space open up on pdx to aus last week and called in and used a GGU. This was an airbus with just 8 F seats.

Excellent to hear. Other posters have shared data points as well. As mentioned earlier, I have done a lot of international flights this year and was basing my comments on my experience when searching for U in the first few months of the year. Obviously, that is outdated now and availability across the board has improved.

I have a basket full of GGU's but I like to use them in conjunction with companion certificates. When I am flying by myself, I am not as concerned about securing U space unless the lowest fare is already GGU eligible. As a 75K, I think I missed only one complimentary upgrade this year between revenue and Main cabin award flights.

Looking at SEA-BOS on a Saturday in early January, Happy to pay the 100 dollars extra for GGU to be confirmed. Flight is completely empty (from seat map) and no GGU seats available. Le sigh.

Used a U space next week for BWI-PDX. (Though when I upfared to instant upgradeable the agent accidentally put me in I and I noticed only later...)

Doesn't I class have a 75% COS bonus?

Yes! It was $50 more than the MVPG instant upgradeable fare. I called in and the CSR was very nice - she just issued a voucher for the difference because a refund and recharge might lose the U space. I should’ve caught the error but as usual AS took care of me.

Awesome! Although flying in I class for $50 more isn't really a bad thing. BWI-PDX is 2358 miles. 75% COS is 1769 EQM. 5000 ÷ (2358 × 0.75) = 2.83 cpm.
Buying EQM for 2.83 cpm is a pretty good deal.

Getting a voucher for the $50 difference is even sweeter.

For sure! I was surprised that upfare to MVPG was $100 and only another $50 to I. In the past I’d never asked about that last increment. As your math shows it’s worth checking that in the future! The U stayed available for a day after I took that I fare.
