The airline said that beginning in mid-July, it will replace non-recyclable plastic stir straws and citrus picks with “sustainable, marine-friendly alternatives” on all of its flights and in its airport lounges.
“Those two items will be replaced starting in July with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified, white birch stir sticks and a bamboo alternative for the citrus pick,” a spokesperson said.

Love it. Will have to order something worthy of a stir stick on my upcoming trip. Which incidentally is mid July.

Good to hear
I'm currently in Vegas and had dinner at the buffet at Mandaly Bay. I ordered three different drinks throughout the night and with each drink they gave me an unwrapped straw. -_- I left the straws still unwrapped in an unused portion of the table. I hope they didn't throw them away. I should have been on the ball and shoukd have told them I didn't want straws, but the drinks were dropped off quickly and I was in the middle of eating.

So is Alaska admitting they can't properly dispose of their trash and it likely ends up in the ocean? Seems to me that if they operate their business properly both the plastic straws and bamboo picks will end up in the same hole in the ground.
It does appear to be a good way to market to those who think it will make a difference.
