One has to wonder if they are expecting another QX meltdown and need the aircraft just in case, if they will just keep more spares around for the summer, or will shift more capacity to the PNW. They haven’t done much route specific advertising and I doubt many people even knew AS was flying to MEX or had service to MSP from SFO. The more west coast campaign may actually be hurting them as people assume they don’t go anywhere but the West Coast and people thinking they now go everywhere from the West Coast find they go to very few places.

If you cut flights, but want to maintain the same or more seats on the overall network then you need to add something somewhere.
Alaska has already said they will cut growth this year to small numbers. We know that right now Paine Field is announced as 9 new routes plus 13 daily departures. There will likely be added routes in summer network wide, as always, to supplement the network. But that's nothing new.

While also wasting the time of the government which now needs to hold another slot reallocation which could have been used by another carrier that actually wanted the slots and not just dump them after 6 months. AS is not building up a good track record in this regard. It is also difficult to know if one’s favorite route will be on the chopping block next which undercuts their hope to build loyalty.

Not surprising. Hub to hub is the last route they want to compete on, so most at risk are LAX, NYC, ORD, DEN, WAS, and IAH. LAX and NYC have to remain by virtue of being the number 1 and 2 markets respectively. ORD is already cut down to 1x, and IAH never began. DEN is the logical next step. WAS is a little weird because DCA and BWI are at least somewhat differentiated from IAD.

They took 4 and are now using 2 so half the slots were temporarily taken away from carriers that could have made better use of them.

AS already had 2 LAX slots, so no the SFO slot is not being moved to LAX. That is not how the slot allocation works. The slot times and point of departure are locked in once awarded.
