yes, you’re right! My bad!

Honestly it seems like the A321NEO could have pulled off 5 rows of first class, and an additional row of premium.

Having a very small fleet of aircraft with five first class rows would be a disaster waiting to happen. There would be endless complaints whenever there is a plane swap.

Wouldn't that have required two FAs for reasonable service?

true, although I think one could argue the -900 fleet could easily pull off 20 as well in line with United and Delta.

N361VA to be in GSO March 1st

Is there any way to tell the difference between whether these jets are going in for maintenance or for cabin mods?

Generally legacy VX painted birds were in for heavy maintenance. I generally feel most AS painted airbuses now going in will be for cabin mods and maintenance. The problem is VX deferred everything once the merger was announced so the airbuses are in for some TLC in general (cant come too soon as i flew N633VA this week....the cabins are very worn and needing some refurbishment).

RIP pineapple express...so many great flights together.....

once "an airplane named desire" goes in for paint....ill just be inconsolable! LOL! ;-)

N628VA went in as a VX painted bird, left with the new configuration, and stopped at VCV on the way back for a new coat of paint. I believe it is being done with HMV, but can't tell yet based off of the three examples we've seen. If I were to guess, I'd say the 321's would be the first to get the mods (increased seat count), then the N6XXVA birds going into maintenance, the N8 & 2 & 3XXVA ones, and finally the 319's. The different cabin configs might impact this (146pax vs 149pax), but it makes sense to do it fleet type at a time and start with the ones which will increase in seat count significantly.

Was hoping the 321s would be the last ones to go, since they seem to be the newest in fleet (and seem to be frequently on the LAX/DCA route). Makes sense I guess to prioritize the mods w/ the highest profit impact, but will be sad to see them go.

Ditto. Heck, even the F seats on those birds still work! The 321s are the best frames in the fleet.

Alaska cant get anything right. ... were you thinking? You seriously were expecting working WiFi?

I really held out hope that AS might use the A321s as a dedicated premium transcon fleet for routes like lax/sfo-dca and lax/sfo-jfk. The F and Y seats on the VX A321NEO are my favorite of any AS aircraft. But every indication from AS publicly has been that they want one consistent product fleet-wide. I just think as an airline grows, the one size fits all model runs into hurdles when you have very different types of routes with very different customer profiles.

I think that's exactly what they are trying to prevent, for every reason you just said. Intra-Alaska flyers are very different customer profile than SEA-LAX or SJC-HNL flyers... yet the same fleet has served those populations very well (with perhaps the single exception being the 737-400 Combis).

Alaska doesn't need to chase the SFO/LAX/SEA to NYC/DC routes with a differentiated product any more than any other route.

Per the AS Email sent out today - as we already figured; the completion of the airbus retrofits are now scheduled to be complete by "early 2020". Whether that is January, April or June - not sure exactly. But given the pace so far; i think it will be mid to late 2020 before all are complete. At least we are almost done the repainting of the aircraft....
