30 more markets in 2018?

I'm surprised that there's not a thread here related to the quarterly earnings call. In particular, Skift had an article about it and led with the angle of AS expansion:

Alaska Airlines, the fifth-largest carrier in the U.S., said Wednesday it will launch in 30 more markets in the next six months.

That expansion comes on the back of launching in 20 markets in the past nine months plus inheriting other routes after completing its acquisition of Virgin America in December.

The Seattle-based company says its expansion is going well. Out of the 20 markets the Alaska Airlines brand launched in the last nine months, 15 are already profitable.

As someone who has one foot out the AS door due to the AA changes, this is certainly intriguing. If this expansion can get me to more places I need for business travel, I may reconsider.

A lot of those "30 more markets" are already baked into the cake, so to speak:

21 by my count, from August 2017 to December 2017.

They already admitted they can't fly the announced expansion with Horizon's struggles; where are they going to get planes and pilots for 10 more routes in addition to the already announced? There's also the issue of the many holes to fill and dots to connect in the existing network

I think that's why they didn't announce specific routes yesterday.

This is 30 on top of what's been announced

And not new destinations necessarily, my read is mostly connecting the dots.

Yeah, I think in this case "market" means introducing (nonstop) service between two points, even if both points are already served by one or more AS/VX flights.

Come on Bay Area-IAH (or even better, HOU, but that's not happening)...

So launching over 50 additional markets for the next six months? The 21 that have been announced but not launched, and 30 more?

In the middle of QX being hosed? Where the hell do all the AS+OO planes come from for 50+ new routes in 6 months?

Yeah. right... I'll believe it when I see it. I tend to think it's going to be what was announced already for the next 6 months + a handful more that launch before 2/18.

Isn't that what "market" usually means in airline speak?

AFAIK, it always means a connection between two destinations, not a destination itself.

When an airline wants to talk about a count of destinations, they use the term "destination", not "market".

A "market" is a where a company sells its product. Now, for non-transportation companies, a market is a place. But for an airline, it sells tickets between two places, so for it a market is between where a particular flight flies.

Within the next 18 months, the way I read it.

I have no idea how the piloting business works, but the articles in the Seattle Times talking about the shortage have specifically been about pilots for the Q400 turboprops. Is it easier to get pilots for 737s? (Note that easier may also mean more expensive, but that's a different sort of problem.)

That's what AS needs to do. I know LGA and DCA slots are hard to get but how nice it would be for a once a day scissors hub like Jet Airways (of India) did in Brussels before.

SEA-PIT-LGA 0730 am departure 737-900ER
SFO-PIT-HPN (Westchester County NY)* 7 am departure 737-700
LAX-PIT-DCA 710 am departure 737-800

*or BDL (Hartford, CT)

Reverse departures around 6 pm

Not so sure there is too much PIT-HPN demand but is there West Coast to HPN demand to fill up the plane?

Not so sure there is SAN, SJC, or PDX demand to PIT but if there were, maybe a mini-hub to 3 of the following, PWM, ISP, BUF, RDU, BOS.
