E-Jet expansion out of SAN: new markets

Surprised that the new routes out of San Diego are *all* E175s, not a single 737. I'd think STL and MCI could handle mainline. This probably isn't helping Alaska in their pilot negotiations, who right now do NOT have a scope clause.

Albuquerque: One daily round-trip flight begins Oct. 18.

Austin: One daily round-trip flight begins Aug. 27.

Kansas City: One daily round-trip flight begins Dec. 15.

Minneapolis/St. Paul: One daily round-trip flight begins Nov. 18.

Omaha: One daily round-trip flight begins Aug. 27.

St. Louis: One daily round-trip flight begins Dec. 15.

Personally, I love the E175s due to the 1-2 config in F. Plenty of F seats too upfront so upgrade chances are pretty good.

The Skywest and Horizon E175 all have 76 seats. Even if AS did have a scope clause it would likely not include 76 seat aircraft.

With all the additional flying can we ever see an Alaska Lounge in SAN?

I can't really see that happening unless they wanted to absorb Horizon. All of Horizon's aircraft (E175 & Q400) are 76 seats.

OO's lower cost structure likely allows AS to compete on more competitive routes. Mainline labor rates would make some of the E-Jet service much less attractive.
As much of the new OO E-jet routes are O&D, I could see why mainline pilots are unhappy. Management would likely earn significant labor goodwill by using OO as more of a feeder, to create more mainline demand. For example, establishing OO feeder to further grow service from SAN to Hawaii and Western Mexico.

That may be very true but mainline growth is somewhat constrained by lack of aircraft. Going to someone like OO or QX (which has like 30 jets on order) allows AS to grow much quicker.

most airlines have limits on the number of small jets flown by regional partners. AS ALPA does not have that, yet. I believe we will see some sort of cap added soon.

I doubt it. What is more likely is that AS ALPA negotiates a rate for an economical plane that has approximately 110-130 seats. That would be the desirable niche for AS.

Well... I came to this thread expecting new route announcements, not a rehash

That being said, it is an interesting rehash.

SAN expansion includes...DAL??

This can't be right, can it?

Alaska's route map shows non-stop service from SAN to DAL on regional. But I've randomly selected a bunch of dates between now and next April, and I don't see anything except VX-AS connections through SFO, or connections through PDX or SEA.

SAN-DAL starts in February and is showing for me on Google Flights.

But much of that language went away after the bankruptcies in the 2000's.
