Confirmed Journalist Mistake: AS Mileage Plan NOT going to Revenue Based Accrual

EDIT: **Its amazing what one word can do to the meaning of a quote. Its not happening, the word "NOT" was left out of the quote.**

Very little info, and it was buried at the end of an article about the merger with VX, but I did find this little quote that I thought I'd share-

Sprague also announced Thursday that Alaska Airlines will transition from a miles-based rewards program to a points-based alternative, in which points are awarded based on the cost of plane tickets rather than the distance of the trip.

Was this previously announced, I've not seen anything posted about it.

Not posted anywhere else that I've seen, and is in contrast to previous comments, but alas, I guess currents change. Good Catch!

If true, that was a quick change from previous comments.

Gulp....definitely not good news. My only glimmer of hope is the word "alternative" which may suggest that you could earn miles based on distance flown OR points. Please AS...you've got a great mileage program that is becoming more unique and appreciated by your frequent frequent flyers every day...don't ruin it....please??

I won't be surprise if AS goes revenue base also. It will be bad news for all AS members..

UPDATE: I reached out to Alaska's media relations. Their response:

This is absolutely INCORRECT. We’ve contacted the reporter and editor and have asked for an immediate correction.

Can't call it Mileage Plan if they aren't miles...

Sad but true I can almost hear the screeching of the brakes on all those status match requests from the AA crowd....

I was just contacted by the Editor at the Juneau Empire. Here is what he said:

This has been fixed online. It ran correctly in print but there was an attempt to fix a grammatical issue online and “not” was deleted. Thanks for letting us know.

Check the link above for the correction. Pretty emphatic response from AS on this one.

I reached out to Alaska via Twitter and they immediately responded that the reports are incorrect. Glad to hear this isn't happening (at least yet) to Mileage Plan!

It makes for a very pleasing little read.

Perhaps the editing mistake and the resulting immediate blowback will reinforce for AS the wisdom of its current course.

I can't find it online but within the past few years a criminal defendant was mistakenly released when the jury chairman announced "We find the defendant now guilty" and the judge thought he'd said "not guilty."

It appears we escaped the noose this time.

From the current version online, emphasis added:

Sprague also announced Thursday that Alaska Airlines will not transition from a miles-based rewards program to a points-based alternative, in which points are awarded based on the cost of plane tickets rather than the distance of the trip.
