Alaska Airlines has published a Q&A blog post about the changes to Emirates redemption levels. Below is a sampling of the key Q&As.

Why is Mileage Plan making this change?

Alaskaís premium Emirates awards have long been known as an exceptionally good deal. With the rise of ďtravel-hacking,Ē intended to exploit Mileage Planís award routing rules, coupled with below-market award levels, our previous award levels were unsustainable. The new award levels enable Alaska to continue to offer Emirates Business Class and First Class as a redemption option
What if I purchased miles intending to book Emirates Business or First Class before I had a chance to book at the previous award level?

If you purchased miles on or after March 1, 2016, you can contact our Customer Care team for a refund.
Why didnít Mileage Plan give advance notice? How can I expect other awards to not change suddenly?

Given the dynamics of this particular award, we were unable to announce changes in advance. This approach doesnít represent a new normal. Our policy is to communicate significant program changes with at least 30 daysí notice when at all possible.
Iíve been saving my miles for this award. What am I supposed to do?

Youíll continue to have access to awards in premium cabins on our other partners with coverage to most of the same destinations. Future changes, if any, to these award levels will be given with advance notice.

Whoa! It's gonna be fun watching the bloggers have a total meltdown tomorrow, not to mention one or two FTers.

Still, though... While it's not a big surprise, it's certainly not a welcome one either.

Emirates devalued First and Business redemptions - 150k to redeem first to Dubai

The calendar is updated as well

This one hurts. ...because it was done with ZERO warning. I held AS to a higher standard. This is a shame to do it this way.

Unbelievable!

No announcement, no warning. I was in the same position as you, ready to click on a round-trip IAD-DXB-SIN for 2 for 400,000. Now it's 720,000!! Shame on Alaska.

Question Emirates awards on AS devalued with no notice

I have been away from this thread for a while. I didn't realize that one-way awards on EK to Asia went up from 75K in J to 105K and 100K in F to 180K see images below. How much notice did AS give us?

If you click on the images they will get bigger. Must have completely missed this...

Just posted on this on the EK sub forum here. Insane that no notice was given I was about to purchase an award from CGK to LAX via DXB and was expecting 75K in J not 105K, cross referenced the award chart and noticed the change.

No notice is pure garbage.

Yeah. The bloggers are going to freak. Let's see how they spin this to promote the AS credit card :-)

There is nothing to spin. This is pure ........ on part of AS. You want to double it fine but give notice. Let people know like AA did when they changed award levels on a specific date. This is just bad business sorry.

All awards have been increased on EK.

Just looked, one way JFK-DXB F is now 150,000 points. J is 82,500.

JFK-Africa is now 120,000 J and 200,000 F!! WOW, thank God I booked mine last week for 77.5 and 100k respectively!

Hmm, given how much of a sweet spot it has been to book EK awards in premium classes, I suspect that they gave no notice to prevent a run taking place. Not justifying it, but would not be surprised if that's a reason (cost to pay EK probably another).

Absolutely. They don't stand to gain much by giving notice. It will be similar to the run that AA saw which is nuts.
