737-800 F Going from 16 to 12 Seats ??

I have noticed that many flights using the 737-800 (such as SMF-SEA) are going from 16 to 12 F seats starting next March. It looks like the Hawaii flights remain at 16. I haven't seen anything posted on this forum about this.

I am wondering if they are possible aircraft swap routes so they don't want to overbook. I checked a few routes out next spring (ones that can't be swapped for a 734/73G) and they still show 16F.

That's my guess (and hope) that its just 'in case' of an a/c swap. As these are probable on short hops like that.

It indeed seems to be only on certain routes. I'm seeing it on SEA to SMF,SFO,SAN,PHX as examples. Yet SEA-LAX remains at 16.

edit: just as I was checking SEA-LAX flights again, the seat map on Expert Flyer now shows "Equipment change in Progress" and shows only 12F and the economy seat map not available. Maybe they are going to put 737-400 or 700 on these west coast flights. If they were just being pro-active you would think they would just block row 4 in F rather than showing it eliminated.

Maybe they are just showing 12 F since the operating equipment is not finalized yet and they want to avoid downgrading anyone who books row 4. Not that F usually fills up this far in advance, but I suppose its possible.

I can't imagine they would reduce the number of F seats, given how long the upgrades lists already are.

Interesting, the seat map doesnt match the 734. I would think it would be easier just to load a 734 like in the past or just not load all the seats for sale.

I'm not sure AS would keep the seats just to please those looking for upgrades.

Fall schedule still has some undecided aircraft on some routes...and this will likely continue over the next year as some -400's will likely be retired and replaced by new a/c coming in 2016. By only showing 12 F it's easy to increase that number rather than reduce it in case it is actually flown by a -400.

Thanks for helping end the speculation ^

Know AS has extended a few leases over the years

Maybe I've missed the thread that answers this, but....

On AS #386 PDX-SFO later this week and seat map now shows 12 F seats on this -800. As I recall, these were supposed to be the new roomy F cabins. Others been so privileged? What pleasures await ?

Equipment swap after your original booking? Looks like it's on a -700 this week.

Yes. That makes more sense. Looks like typo on seat map I was being shown on AS website. Everything else points to -700. OK. Never mind.

I honestly don't think we will see the new F cabins or premium economy seats until well into 2017....I think the Virgin America merger is slowing things down a bit.

Would they ever swap an AS 737-8 for a Virgin plane once the merger is finalized? I'd love to try out the white leather seats and mood lighting!
