AS Rules/Pricing For Infant in Arms on EK Award

My wife and I are thinking of redeeming AS miles to Fly First on EK JFK - DXB once we find some availability. We are expecting a baby and will likely fly with an infant-in-arms.

Does anyone here have experience how they price these awards taxes/fees for infants? Is it a flat fee? Is it a 10% of the normal fare, or full fare? Or just 10% of the miles used? Any insights are appreciated.

I'm not so sure how an additional infant would go in terms of award ticket. IME, it's usually all or nothing.

Can't say about AS, but I was pricing SEA-ICN business award on UA/OZ with an infant. Kid's surcharge was $600 round-trip.

Iirc, you will need to purchase the infant ticket through EK at 10% of an adult cash fare in the class of service and on the route after you make your AS award bookings. Depending upon whether you want to pay 10% of an adult cash fare you may find it is cheaper just to redeem for another adult award.

when i redeemed my miles for a ticket on EK, AS refused to ticket the infant and directed me to get in touch with the operating carrier to get it taken care of. i got in touch with EK, which issued the infant ticket and i had to pay 10% of the fare.

Its a cash payment and usually 10% of the full fare.

Mrahul - thanks for the insight. How did they calculate what the "fare" was? If I found a discounted F fare for $3000 could EK charge $300 as the 10%? Or would they always charge the insane $30,000 F fare to make taxes $3,000.

Look at the fare breakdown. I believe you are responsible for the full tax, in addition to 10% of the base fare

So in this case would it be 10% of $3,482.31 + 100% of XA,XY,YC,YQ,US,LK?

Very helpful! So $384 basically for the full infant in arms fee.

Having just booked two infant in arms / lap child tickets on awards with AA, be prepared for it to be a complete cluster. On an JL-JL award ended up just buying the infant ticket with JL since AA was pricing it about $200 higher.

I would suggest pricing it out on ITA Matrix before and being armed with the information before you accept the fare AA throws out. You could also ticket with EY if needed.

A quick check of RTs from IAD - AUH on ITA shows that EY pricing for the lap infant is ~ $200 cheaper on most dates in F. Sample fare:

Fare for 1 infant in lap
Fare 1: Carrier EY RAP3MUS WAS to AUH (rules)
Passenger type INF, round trip fare, booking code R
Covers IAD-AUH (First)
$763.00
Fare 2: Carrier EY RAP3MUS AUH to WAS (rules)
Passenger type INF, round trip fare, booking code R
Covers AUH-IAD (First)
$763.00
US September 11th Security Fee (AY) $5.60
US International Departure Tax (US) $17.50
US International Arrival Tax (US) $17.50
US Customs Fee (YC) $5.50
US Immigration Fee (XY) $7.00
USDA APHIS Fee (XA) $5.00

Subtotal per passenger $1,584.10
Number of passengers x1

SUBTOTAL FOR 1 INFANT IN LAP $1,584.10
This ticket is non-refundable.
Changes to this ticket will incur a penalty fee.

FT does not allow cross-posting across different fora. As the topic is not dependent on which airline's miles one uses, and your posts have received more answers in this forum, your threads have been merged (and the identical post asking about using AA miles deleted) here.
