Seat Power
Anyone know when retrofitted aircraft with power ports are to start showing up? Also, at what rate should we expect to see them upgraded?

I believe the first aircraft is due in service in December with all aircraft done by the end of 2014. With approximately 120 aircraft being retrofitted (I doubt the combis or -400's on lease will get power) they'd have to pull ten a month out of service. I imagine they'll start with the 800ER's, 900ER's, 800 and 900's, 700's and then the owned -400's.

You bet the FC seats will get it! There'd be a MVP mutiny if they weren't!

I phrased my question poorly. Will the seats change at all, or will the original seats work with a power mod. |

The power mod will be done in conjunction with the installation of new Recaro seats on the -800's and -900's. |

We are replacing all our Main Cabin seats on the majority of our fleet with a new design that offers additional living space, the same level of comfort and a slightly thinner seat back. With the thinner seat back and the reconfiguration of our galleys, we're able to add one row of seats to our 737-800s. The distance between seats remains unchanged with the new design that offers additional knee room by relocating the literature pocket above the tray table. The new seats will also feature 120-volt power plugs at every seat. Lastly and most directly related to your concern, with these changes all Main Cabin seats will offer a similar amount of space and we will not be charging more or less for any particular seat on the plane. -David |

Per today's NYT Travel section, first AS a/c equipped with 110 power at your seat fly December 3. Didn't say how many or provide more details. Quick Google search failed to reveal more details. Anyone else? Doing Chicago run on Saturday/Monday myself.

I haven't seen any yet. Talked to an FA who said "this year", which corroborates the article, I guess. Still don't know how to tell if the flight will have power or not. If I were in scheduling I'd start these on the EWR, BOS and DCA routes.

The first plane is N548AS. It was scheduled to come out of check in GSO on Dec. 1, but has been pushed back about a week.

Sure, we had our setbacks (the Advanced Automation Program of the 90's is a good example that came immediately to mind) but I take exception to the sweeping indictment you have made here. I think you should remember your judgment on FAA's perceived lack of progress the next time the plane you fly on successfully executes a GPS approach in poor weather. The technology was pioneered here in the Alaska Region and with cooperation from industry (most notably, AS) is now in place. It's one of many examples where FAA embraced technology and led the way to a safer NAS. |
