To try to make sense of what's all happening between AS and DL, the idea arose during the recent Alaska do to create a compendium in the wiki of the various stages of the current spat. Please add your knowledge where you can!

Timeline of events:

SEA-KIX was an odd one. It started several years (6/2010) before DL's curent international build up out of SEA. Its termination was announced (8/2013, flights ending 11/2013) about the time DL started adding flights to build SEA feed.

With AC (Rouge) adding YVR-KIX, prospects for DL's return don't seem strong.

DL elites didn't get called for early boarding at LAS this morning...just AA.

Not sure that's an indicator of anything --- at GEG for QX flights, I've had MVPs not get called for early boarding.

I wonder - Does the UA SFO-HND flight have much of an impact on SEA travelers? SEA-SFO-HND

As the third largest carrier ex-SEA, UA still has a lot of customers up that way who may be sticking with UA and accepting the connection in SFO for HND or NRT for that matter.

I've been on a few AS routes out of SEA lately and DL elites haven't been called, while AA elites have. Flying to DTW this weekend and LGB next week, will see if that trend continues.

Alaska should take over Delta and either keep the Alaska name or compromise and decide on the Northwest name.

Instead of having the largest airlines being Texas International (or Continental), America West, and Delta, I like the United, Northwest, Pan Am, and TWA names. Since the Pan Am name is owned by someone else, how about the big three being TWA, United, and Northwest?

AA wants HND slot

AA asks FAA for DL's moribund HND slot

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/americ...004218529.html

American Airlines Group Inc. asked U.S. regulators for flight rights to Tokyo held by Delta Air Lines Inc., saying the smaller carrier isn't making the best use of access to the Japanese capital's close-in Haneda airport.

By taking over the flight slot, American would operate year-round between Haneda and Los Angeles, a plan "substantially superior to Delta's near-dormant Seattle-Haneda service," according to a filing yesterday with the U.S. Transportation Department.

Delta, which is paring Haneda service starting this month, will only fly the Seattle route often enough to keep it from reverting to the Transportation Department, American said.

It looks like DL is snatching customers from UA, not AS...

http://seattletimes.com/text/2024694181.html

n August, Alaska’s passenger traffic through Sea-Tac was up 9.4 percent compared with a year earlier, roughly in line with overall traffic growth at the airport, thanks to a strong local economy.

For the year through August, the hometown airline carried 51 percent of all the passengers passing through the airport. Delta’s share of Sea-Tac passenger traffic climbed to just shy of 15 percent, almost 2 points higher than four months earlier.

Delta’s growth is affecting the market share of international carriers out of Sea-Tac more than Alaska’s.

Year-to-date through August, United’s passenger traffic share at the airport was down 7 percent compared with the previous year.

Somebody tell me what I am doing wrong...

From this link: http://www.portseattle.org/About/Pub...s/default.aspx

Scroll down to here: Current and Historic Traffic and Operations Statistics

You can pull up the latest Total Passengers by Airline (1/14 through 7/2014), and also last year (1/13 - 7/2013).

What I see is:

AS (incl AS Skywest and Horizon)
2013 total pax: ~10,500,000
% Market Share: 52.29%

2014 total pax: ~10,970,000
% Market Share: 51.85%

DL (incl Delta Connections/Skywest)
2013 total pax: ~2,335,000
% Market Share: 11.64%

2014 total pax: ~2,826,000
% Market Share: 13.36%

UA (incl UAEX/Skywest)
2013 total pax: ~1,635,000
% Market Share: 8.15%

2014 total pax: ~1,820,000
% Market Share: 8.61%

DL's growth is the most dramatic, relatively: +500,000 pax year over year. And, from a smaller base, it does look like they took market share from AS.

AS also grew, +500,000 pax year over year. From their position of dominance though, this growth was not enough to maintain their market share % from the same period 2013.

UA grew by 190,000 pax year over year, and increased their market share to 8.61% in 2014.

This seems to contradict the article that eponymous_coward posted the link to:

"Year-to-date through August, United’s passenger traffic share at the airport was down 7 percent compared with the previous year."

I used excel for my math, so I do not think I added wrong...

Can somebody else take a look and try and figure out this discrepancy?

note: I did not include Compass in the above numbers. Does Compass at SEA fly exclusively for DL? If yes, that will bump them up a bit.
