To try to make sense of what's all happening between AS and DL, the idea arose during the recent Alaska do to create a compendium in the wiki of the various stages of the current spat. Please add your knowledge where you can!

Thanks to everyone who posted answers.

I find it interesting. Assuming it's done by bids, and assuming AS didn't lower its bid this year, it's interesting that DL would bid on a seasonal route and that the GSA would accept DL's slightly lower bid despite that route having less-solid reliability compared to AS (with their custom RNP approaches) and, of course, the whole seasonal aspect.

How do GSA city pair fares work for government travelers? Are you guys locked into DL now 100%, or can you book on AS if you can find some reason to? What about in IRROPS or for high-priority trips that you can't afford a day's delay due to a DL cancellation?

At least you guys are probably assured a seat up front, given that there can't be that many DL elites flying into JNU and DL doesn't upgrade AS elites until the gate anyway, so there should be plenty of seats up front by the time you guys are ticketed...
Wouldn't it be possible to book JNU-DCA on DL with the Juneau-Seattle leg a codeshare on AS?
What if AS eliminates that codeshare?

Still surprised AS didn't include the PDX-SEA flights in the double miles promotion although the addition of mainline AS may be all the response it felt was necessarily due to the frequency of the QX flights.

I remember back in the 90s when DL was having a promotion giving you a free ticket or a bunch of miles (can't remember what it was exactly) for flying a certain number of segments so I definitely took advantage of the PDX-SEA DL flights they had at the time which were operated by 727s
I don't think the DL flights are code shares with AS so most of us PDX folks when flying AS through Seattle to anywhere would only get a QX opportunity. I personally fly through SEA a lot back and forth to PSP and always book the cheapest flight and then call in as a Gold at 10pm the night before and move the SEA / PDX flight up closer to the actual mainline AS flight and have never had an issue doing that, or simply going standby. So no reason really to fly on DL PDX/SEA unless you are on DL from Seattle.

But DL is offering a $247 -CA discounted fare on JNU-DCA and $249 on JNU-SEA, both much cheaper than the cheapest fare in the contract AS offered last year (according to that table).

Again, it's not slightly lower, it's a lot lower, as long as there's availability in the fare class Delta uses for the -CA fares. (I don't know what it is for Delta, but it's typically a middle discount economy bucket, probably something like L or K on DL.) Because that fare bucket is also used for general public sales, airlines don't normally limit availability in the bucket specifically to limit -CA sales; instead, they bid a -CA price they're willing to sell whenever that bucket has availability.

How do GSA city pair fares work for government travelers? Are you guys locked into DL now 100%, or can you book on AS if you can find some reason to? What about in IRROPS or for high-priority trips that you can't afford a day's delay due to a DL cancellation?
I was only fairly briefly eligible for government fares, but my understanding is that you have to have one of a set of specific reasons why you don't need the flexibility of the government fare. (Remember, no change or cancellation fees on either YCA or -CA.) But if you're completely sure that the trip is going to happen as scheduled and the restricted fare available to the general public is cheaper than the contract fare, government employees can book the restricted fare. See FAQ item 4 from the GSA here, particularly:

Commercial airfares can be highly volatile, so an exception to the mandatory use requirement allows government travelers to take advantage of low commercial fares offered by non-contract carriers, if the fares are also offered to the general public.
Choosing not to use the contract carrier because of personal preference, frequent flyer clubs, and more is a violation of the contract.

If AS is running scared, they're playing it pretty cool. Quarterly dividend just raised 25% from 10 cents to 12.5 cents per share. Stock price off about 15% from its pre-split peak, however.

Remember, JNU is dominantly a market where customers fly to JNU rather than people based in JNU flying out. A lot like the dynamics of most Caribbean flights [cruise/leisure traffic with some government traffic and sparse business travel].

Well JNUites like to travel...south. Northbound traffic is from ANC and such. Although I guess there is that cruise traffic seasonally.

JNU's MSA population is between 32-33K and JNU handles north of 350K passengers per year or 10x the residents figure, so it is very clear that the majority of passengers using JNU are not from the area.

Has anyone noticed that it's been a little quiet on the "western front" of late? I see DL is changing/deleting some Asian flights.

The other day I was on a SEA-SAN flight which was running real late so sitting at the gate I peaked at DL the next flight was open even FC had two seats. AS "found" another bird and off we went.

Clear to you, perhaps.

The above logic does not appear to take into account that many Juneau residents (e.g., yours truly) fly in and out of here many more times than once per year.

The plane and the ferry are our only two ways in and out of Dodge. Many choose the former.

Absolutely, however, how many JNU residents out of 32-33K fly more than several times a year?

Also, this does not factor in some residents who do not fly at all. All I am saying that based on the MSA figure, in order for at least half of the customers flying in/out of JNU to be JNU based, every resident will have to travel on average 3-4 times per year. You think the average # of trips per year for 32-33K residents stands around 4 trips per year?

Also, my 350K figure is a little outdated, I have a hunch that figure will be somewhat higher this year with the new DL flight and lower fares. Maybe 375-400K.

I wouldn't be surprised if 3x a year was an average trip for jNUites...some more some less.

That would not surprise me.

I agree with the others. I think the passenger count that golfing boy mentions is primarily made up of those living in/around JNU. JNU is a big tourist draw primarily because of the cruise ships that stop there. When the cruise ships are in town the population probably nearly doubles - but it's only for a day. The limited number of cruises that begin/end there are on very small ships and really don't draw large numbers of people that fly in/out. The ships are really small (100 or so passengers) Additionally, I'd be very surprised if there was a large number of tourists flying in/out of JNU. I'm sure there are some, but I doubt the number is high.
