I don't know about your second question.
Yes,I find this rather annoying....makes me think that the accounts haven't really been closed !

However, when I phone and use the automated phone service...I do get a message to confirm that the account I entered is closed.

Bad news! Just applied for 2 Alaska Airline card, and I was told that you are allow to have only 1 Alaska Airline Card per person now! This rule came as of last week! No more multiple churning! so sad!

It's only a matter of time, when people are applying 2 or 3 (or 5 in USA)
just like AMEX Canada, moving to one-time bonus too

Call back again at least twice to confirm. There's always rogue agents who have said similar things in the past.

Just cancel the one you have, then apply for a new one. Not so sad...

Datapoint: waited patiently for 3 months before applying for another Alaska card and got denied. Called in and they also said "you are allow to have only 1 Alaska Airline Card per person". Should I close down my existing two cards then? haha

In our recent cases, MBNA simply CANCELLED our older AS cards without warning, when we applied for a new AS card, and then approved my card when I called to ask why I didn't get my new card yet. But for my wife, after they cancelled her older AS card, she had call in and ask them to shift limits from another of her existing MBNA cards to birth the new AS card. This was in Jan and Mar, respectively.

Aw geez, this is not good. I recently successfully applied for 2 AS cards, separated by a couple of months. My wife has one and needs #2 to match me, but I'm starting to wonder if it's going to work.
