Odd occurrence with online award changes

I'm on one way saver award ticket on Monday in Y PHX-PDX-BOS for 12.5K. I wanted to change to F award. Doing a dummy booking i found earlier flight with F on all segs available for 25K. When I went in to change my award ticket it said the flight was available for an addditional 12.5K but F was only from PHX-PDX with PDX-BOS in Y. I thought that was odd becasue it was the same routing on the same day.

I ended up booking a new F ticket and cancelling the old one so I could be in F t. On a good note the website remembered I'm gold and it allowed me to cancel with an immediate return of my 12.5K miles

Missy probably knows more about this. But doing a "dummy booking" can take a seat out of inventory depending on how far you went through the booking process. If so, that seat may not be released immediately (if ever) back into the inventory. Additionally, you could have been the victim of someone making a booking at that exact moment for the same flight (hence taking the award seat away). Or, perhaps the revenue management system was updating at that exact moment. Or, a revenue management analyst was updating inventory for that particular flight at that moment.
