Can i transfer miles from another program to AS

Hi. Is it possible for me to transfer miles from my AA account to AS? Is this a 1:1 swap? Thanks

From page 4 of AS Mileage Plan Guidelines...

"A member who is enrolled in more than one frequent traveler program may not receive mileage credit in more than one program for the same activity. Transfering of mileage from one frequent traveler program to another is not permitted."

Actually...yes you can. Both Airlines belong to points.com which allows you to exchange miles, but its about a 10:1 exchange. The value of 5000 American miles is worth 523 Alaska miles according to their exchange calculator.

Actually, NO YOU CAN'T. While you can trade miles for various AWARDS with other airlines, you cannot combine mileage. There is no way to take your AAdvantage miles and transfer them to your Mileage Plan account, or vice-versa.

Based on Missydarlin's post, it appears it is possible. What gives?

Ok, here's the deal: You CANNOT call Alaska or American and transfer mileage from one to the other, or vice-versa. The literature from both programs clearly outlines this.

HOWEVER...if you go to the Points.com website, you can have miles exchanged from one to the other. The exchange rate is their "cost" of doing business, though (they actually take your miles out of airline "A" and buy some for you at airline "B", the miles don't actually "transfer" per se).
Typically, this rate of exchange is 1 mile to the new airline for every 10 miles taken from the old one. NOT a good deal by any means. But once again, technically, you're not transferring miles.

Isn't that what I said?? It sounded like sa_boy wanted to get American miles in his Alaska account, and that is the only way to do it. I don't think that its worth it either, but it can be done. Call it exchanging or transferring, end result is the same.

Welcome to the board Snowdevil..but you didn't have to yell NO YOU CAN'T

Slow down there, Turbo. While I capitalized the "NO YOU CAN'T," it was for emphasis only. I wasn't "yelling" at you.

You had said you can transfer mileage, and technically, that's not correct. The end result may appear to be a transfer, but it is not. As you're no doubt aware, it's very important to be accurate when advising people of rules and guidelines, since a misinterpretation can lead to problems down the line.

Thank you for the welcome. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I'll side with missydarlin, since the original poster left open the possibility of something other than a 1:1 swap. What would you call a (single) transaction which removes miles from AA and add miles to AS - I'd call it a transfer.

Turbo? LOL
