Flying out of Boston, success two out of two times. Out of PHL, failed 1/1, but it looks like first class was sold out. Flyng out of BWI tomorrow, so we will see how that goes.

I would think a >$450 RT bought via A2B with an Elite flying would just about guarantee an upgrade, but not so.

I've not ever asked the flight crew, although that sure makes sense. On quite a few of the flights I've been on there has been space in business. However, I would feel awkward in announcing "I'm an elite" . Would showing my boarding pass, that shows Elite on it, help?

I keep hoping for a crew member to give me an upgrade on board, as FL/fa has written about doing, but no such luck yet.

Did you mark the ticket for "Elite processing"? That seems to be the key, if you buy in the two highest coach fare classes.

Another side bit is that I attempted to change a booking online, and the person I was talking with on the phone had no idea how the elite program worked. She tried to get me to pay $150 to push my flight back a week. I ended up cancelling my ticket and just rebooking. Don't know how much that ended up costing airtran in credit card fees.
