Airtran makes upgrades from any fare available to non-elites

Welcome to the nation's first and only affordable Business Class. Stretch out in two-by-two seats that offer seven inches more legroom, four inches more room in the seat, and all the room your elbows could ever want. You'll even get drinks on the house. All starting at just $35 over our very affordable full coach fare (Y class) or $70 on connecting flights ($50 per nonstop flight for Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco, $85 for connecting flights for Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco).

Currently, as a special promotion, for the amounts listed above, upon checking in for travel, you may upgrade from any fare class on a first come, first served basis, if space in Business Class is available.
Elite members continue to get confirmed upgrades to business class at booking on full fare tickets, and purchased upgrades remain available the day before travel on all other fares.

While Elites (much like DL's Medallions) like the free upgrades, its a great way for AirTran to add incremental revenue. It would be nice if they would let us upgrade from the lower fares for a reduced rate : Then again, a $35 upgrade still is great.

I fly AirTran reasonably often, and thought they always allowed upgrades from any fare for $35 per segment....for anyone. True, it has always been a "special offer" but it was only taken "off" for just a few months over a year ago. Then it came back.

I don't fly the western routes, but aren't these in fact increases in the fees?

My mother flies AirTran between Philly & Tampa every once in a while. She is by no means elite in their program.

She has always been able to upgrade her AirTran super-cheap economy class ticket by paying a fee at check-in if a business class seat is available.
