Airtran Accelerates Fleet Modernization Plan

ORLANDO, Fla. -- AirTran Holdings Inc.'s (AAI) AirTran Airways unit will accelerate its fleet modernization plan with the delivery of 20 Boeing Co. (BA) 717 aircraft in 2002 financed by Boeing Capital Corp.

Concurrently, AirTran Airways will retire 14 DC-9 aircraft, resulting in a seat-mile growth rate above 20% for the year.

In a press release Thursday, AirTran Airways said it is the launch customer for the Boeing 717 and the largest operator of the aircraft, with a total of 32 in its fleet.
