ORD Flagship Lounge access for AY J Flight

Hi – I am a Chicago-based AA non-elite who will be flying ORD-HEL in J (booked using AS miles) in a few weeks. I was delighted to read that the ORD flagship lounge is re-opening, but as AY departs from Terminal Five, I was wondering if I would be permitted in to the Flagship lounge?

Admittedly, if I am able to do OLCI with AY (may not check bags and just carry-on) then with an eligible boarding pass, I may be able to enter into Terminal 3. Sometimes, it really depends on the TSA agent, but I have found that they sometimes don’t care if you’re going into the wrong terminal, just as long as your BP is an eligible one. The AA website has some jargonese about “eligible terminals” and the last thing that I want to do is to show-up early, only to be turned away, then have to wait/visit a sub-par OW lounge in Terminal Five. Often times, I feel like this is a YMMV type of thing, depending on the Agent(s) who are working that day.

Any thoughts/experiences with this? I.e. any ORD-based flyers in QR/BA/RJ/AY J flying out of T5 try to access the T3 Flagship lounge successfully since it re-opened?

As long as you have a same day boarding pass for any terminal at ORD, you will be allowed to enter T3 and go to the AA Flagship Lounge. Just make sure to leave enough time to get back to T5 and clear security.

Thank you for the quick response! A few follow-up questions:

1. Does anyone know what time the check-in counters at ORD open for AY? I assume up to 3 hours in advance. I am going to try for OLCI and hopefully will not have to check luggage, so if I can by-pass going straight to T5, I might just do that.

2. As a confirmed J-passenger, will I have the chance to take the shuttle that goes from T3 to T5 (BA used to run this - not sure if it is still active)?

Hello again -

This time, I will be flying JAL premium economy from ORD to HND. According to JAL's website, this enables FL access at ORD. Is this correct?

Thanks!

Without elite status or a business/first ticket, I don't think the usual One World lounge access rules apply here.

You should receive access to whichever lounge JL has partnered with at ORD for their Premium Economy pax.

Premium economy on JAL doesn’t come with lounge access under the oneworld alliance rules that grant access to Oneworld Sapphires/Emeralds and some business/first class flyers at ORD. Unless JAL has contracted with a lounge at ORD to give its premium economy class flyers lounge access, lounge access will have to come by way of something other than simply being in premium economy on JAL or there is no lounge access.

1. It may have even been open 3.25 or 3.5 hours before departure.

2. You can take the airside shuttle to go from T3 to T5 with an AY boarding pass for ORD-HEL.

If not having checked in luggage and having an AY boarding pass to get airside at ORD, you can go direct to T3 to use the lounges there. My ORD-departing Finnair boarding passes printed by the AY check-in counter mentioned lounge access at the Swissport lounge, but I have no problem using them at the AA lounges at ORD to get the Flagship dining.

JAL is unique in that they provide lounge access to Premium Economy and full fare economy customers.

Based on the below it appears Premium Economy (without OW Sapphire or Emerald status) gets access to the Admirals Club rather than the Flagship Lounge.
