I really wish AMEX would build a lounge at IAD.

It would be great to see an AMEX lounge at IAD. They’ve been opening lounges at other airports but IAD.

It’s interesting to see Capital One getting into the lounge business considering their HQ is not far from IAD.

It makes sense to start this where the execs can drop in on it regularly.

What is the point of credit/charge card companies investing in lounge networks? Is it to attract people to use their cards or is it simply for brand awareness? If the latter then I get it. If the former it's not going to work unless there's a decent number of lounges. Even the Amex network is tiny by comparison to airline networks.

Cap One simply paid for the branding rights. The lounge is being opened by TAV America which operates two premium lounges at JFK and is looking to expand. It is unfortunately located in an inconvenient place post-Security. Will still need to AeroTrain or moon bus out to a concourse and walk to a gate.

The Amex Centurion Lounges most certainly do attract customers to the product family. Even with reduced access the Centurion lounges are popular to the point of waiting lists.

In the case of Capital One, they are just putting their brand on it, the way State Farm does a football stadium.

There is always a question of build vs buy vs lease (or brand) vs JV. With the success of the Centurion lounges as a draw to a Premium card, this may be the first step towards an expansion of the model with less capital up front. Others have used Priority Pass. If it works, there is likely to be more of this kind of offering.

For Capital One, it's just branding. They also currently have the rights to name the former Verizon Center (née MCI Center) in DC.

I do not see a press release by Capital One on the matter so you are quite likely right.

Even if it's just branding, and one-off branding at that, this might be great news for us lounge lizards. When the majors battle for our business, we win.
