Underage Drinking @ Delta Sky Club

HI everyone,

20 year old here looking to visit a Delta Sky Club (without open bar) after completing a flight in a few weeks- just waiting four hours for family.

Amex Platinum authorized user here, so I'll have acess but had a couple questions. DISCLOSURE yes it's illegal but cmon, everyone here has had alcohol before being 21. I'm responsible and plan on a couple drinks max.

I've heard they ask for ID when you enter the club- if thats true, I'm obviously giving them my real.

If I'm in and go to the bar, do you guys think they'll card me? And if they do, am i safe to use my fake? no way they crosscheck guests upon entry and tell bartender who's underage.. or am I crazy?

Please help! Thanks.

Nothing personal, but I hope they don't. SC;s are licensed facilities and when they get caught serving minors, they often get their license suspended and that means nobody gets a drink for a bit.

Since you say it isn't an open-bar lounge, I would not expect to be carded upon admission but I would expect the bartender to card you. I would NOT mess with a fake ID - not because I expect the bartender to be cross-checking with the front desk, but because of potential repercussions. If you get booted from a local bar, no big deal. A potential ban from Skyclubs or a call to the airport police would be much harsher IMO.

I'd probably have no qualms ordering the drink, but if asked for ID just change my order. "Oh, never mind then, my ID is over in my bag I'll just have a Coca-cola". They'll know what that means and everyone saves face.

With this in mind, OP, in the very unlikely chance that you get served and you get caught by some alcohol enforcement officer, please donít say the lounge served you. You have no obligation to answer any questions. Take the Fifth.

(To be clear, I am not suggesting you break any laws. Just want you to understand your right to remain silent.)

Reminds me when the UA Red Carpet Club in Seattle had their liquor license suspended for five days due to providing drinks to minors. The clubs have a lot on the line if they get caught.

UNITED LOSES LIQUOR LICENSE AT SEA RED CARPET CLUB FOR SERVING ALCOHOL TO MINORS!

IMO it's a risk flying or entering an airport with fake ID on you even if you don't use it. How could you "explain" if TSA or CBP found it? Remember that they do have the right to search you, assuming that you're entering/exiting the USA and/or do want to fly.

Also, please don't risk the ability of DL SCs to serve alcohol just becasue you want your underage drink. Have your parents serve you at home instead (and don't drive afterward).

Note: IANAL.

Another possibility is that you happen to have one or two single-once liquor bottles in your carry-on. Order a Coke or Sprite. Take it from there.

A third possibility is that you go to pretty well any other country in the world (outside the Middle East) and simply order a drink.

To expand on the answers already provided, my understanding is Skyclubs with tended bars allow minors in but will check ID at the bar. Those with self-serve bars card at the entrance, so you might not be able to get into those at all even if you donít intend to drink. Iím not sure if exceptions are made for parents traveling with children - I havenít been underage in quite a few years now.

Thanks. That way OP gets what he wants, nobody at Delta gets in trouble, and the loungeís liquor license is safe.

Yes, they are likely to card you if you look under 25. I drank underage at multiple airline lounges and so did my spouse. It wasn't really a big deal at all.

I have no personal objections to a 20 year old drinking alcohol. After all a story my mom told me about my dad's time in Vietnam one of the few things he talked about was he indeed drank alcohol and smoked pot over there. He signed up with parents permission at 17. So my personal opinion if it is "legal" for 17, 18, 19 year old kids to drink Budweiser and smoke pot in Vietnam back in the 60's then surely a 20 year old can enjoy a drink in a Skyclub.

Now the smart saying of just because you can do something doesnt mean you should applies here. OP you have been given some great advice in this thread.

Yes, if you look "youngish" , they may ask you for a card ! Years ago we were in a small casino in Vegas, my son less than 18, a BIL 45 (father of two). He was carded and since he was a tourist did not carry any ID. He was asked to leave the Blackjack table, my kid played on ! Go figure.
