Stopover rules

I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but I'll ask anyway.

Looking to fly TYO-HKG, but it's awful short for 40,000 miles OW. Can I instead fly TYO-HKG (stopover), HKG-KIX and have it count as one way TYO-KIX flight with stopover?

Per the rules, there are no stopovers. In theory at least ;)

I know this may not help your current situation but using Avios is perfect for short intra-Asia OneWorld flights since their chart is distance based.

Great idea. I really need to diversify my mileage earning...these AB miles are not that good of a value and nearly impossible to book!

If done well, AB miles are among the best currencies in both earning and burning.
They offer far more value than Alaska Miles for example.

What are some examples of "done well"? I was originally only going to use my miles for 25,000 mile upgrades to business on AB long haul flights, but I've got to many miles now and happen to need them for this HKG-TYO trip.
