744 Upperdeck Bin Sizes

Had a quick search and couldnt' find the answer for the Air NZ 744.

So what are the sizes of the upperdeck side and overhead storage bins, exactly dimensions may be impossible to obtain but how much smaller than the standard bins ? :)

They're big enough for an 18" rollaboard, and a 22" if you really cram it in. But you won't get anything else in, and if you're in PE you run the risk of people like me making faces at you because suddenly I have nowhere to put my laptop bag.

They're suitable for a smallish backpack or 4/5 or so smallish (laptop sized) bags and some duty free.

Yes as with all 747's I have flown, upper deck overhead bins are smaller than than lower deck bins, and side bins much smaller still.

It has been a while but are they not of similar size to the 737 or are they closer to the SAAB 340 or Dash 8?

Overhead bins on 747 upper deck are similar size to 737 and bigger than S340 and Q300.

I had no problem fitting my laptop bag and roll on in the overhead bin. I was sitting in Bus. Prem 747 upper deck. The roll on is max allowable for carry on, 22'?
I have never had a shortage of carry on space on an intl NZ flight. Part of the reason IMO, is that most people are checking a bag, going a long distance for more than a few days so have more stuff to take. I would hazard a guess that I am in the minority travelling LAX/SFO-AKL return with only carry on.

Count me in that minority. I can count on one hand the number of NZ flights where I've had to put carry on in the closet due to lack of room overhead.

It's happened to me on my last 3 744 flights with NZ. Admittedly, I don't travel anywhere near as much as Kiwi Flyer :).

In all three cases (MEL-AKL, AKL-MEL, and LAX-LHR) the people were American couples bringing a 22" rollaboard on each, and exhausting the overhead space in PE. In business I don't think it's as much an issue because there is much a better seat:locker ratio.

I was a little bit miffed to be boarding to the exit row in PE earlier this month to have 3 people infront of me stuff rollaboards into the overheads, leaving me with nowhere to put my two (modestly sized) laptop bags - until an FA noticed the lockers wouldn't actually close with the rollaboards in them and removed them.

I've seen quite a few rollaboards have to go into the upstairs closet, and on one flight that closet became too full and the bags had to go downstairs - the FAs indicated this isn't uncommon, since apparently during the refit the upstairs closet shrunk in length resulting in much less space.

YMMV, of course.

that would be a 737-300 with very very small bins :)

What is clear is that all bins are not created equal;)
I have forgotten but on the main deck are the bins the bigger 747 or like the older version found on the classics, eg. 747-200?
