Status bag tags no longer a thing?

In the past I had/have Gold bag tags. When I renewed the last couple years I didnt get new ones which I kind of understand but got to Elite recently and was wondering do I get tags?

My partners Elite parter card arrived the other day but I still havent got my Elite card/pack. I rang up to ask about my card and tbh it was up there as one of the most average phone experiences I have had so didnt ask any further questions beyond when my card might arrive.

You get Elite tags as part of the Elite welcome pack.

They serve absolutely *zero* purpose. Nobody uses them because they'll just snap anyway if you use them on checked luggage.

Not on actual checked luggage perhaps, but loads of people around Wellington seem to have them on backpacks..

I normally chuck them on my carry on bag so I can use fast bag regionally. Although I admit I havent flown a lot regionally lately so not sure if thats still a thing.

I havent got a pack yet so assuming the reorder of the card the call centre said they would do may trigger that.

Fastbag now happens at check-in and need a normal bag tag and drop at bag drop. not the blue tag.

The elite tags serve no purpose now.

Other airlines who use the RFID tags & eink tags which replace the printed tags could be helpful.

I personally use them as general luggage tags and haven't had problems with them snapping.

Mine broke a long time ago, so I don't think I would bother with them even if I got new ones tbh.

The only real purpose they serve is a quick way for ground staff / crew to check you're entitled to two carry on bags.. But that's not something they really seem to even care about these days!

All mine snapped in two, or snapped at the little plastic band cut-out.
I have a Qantas RFID clunky substantial thing which I got with platinum - does it work with all carriers or is QF the only airline with the technology to track it?

I presume only QF, although I assume smart people can probably read/decode them (unless encrypted). I have one for QF Gold, and quite like it.

Only domestically from what I understand.

BA for a while were trialing (think they stopped) eink alongside RFID. So could show a barcode and destination. Being eink only needs energy to change image not persist it so the energy from the NFC from phone was enough.

Think IATA and SITA are working on more airline & airports interoperability on baggage tracking.

My understanding is the QF ones are just a fixed serial number. The matching, destination, etc is handled on the IT side.

So there isn't really anything to decrypt. Given the age of them, range required and speed I don't think they will have a challenge and repsonse system so releases serial number only to QF readers.

Have to make sure you press the fast bag option on the Kiosk as it will print fast bag on the bag tag. Has been working that way since they brought Fast Bag back.

Speaking of fast bag it was hilarious at TRG the other week.

A guy boarding quite a way in front of me lifted up the cover on the fast bag trolley and put his bag in there despite it being behind the barrier. He was lucky one of the ground handlers obviously saw it and then carried it to the plane.

As I was in 1A I overheard the discussion with the super entitled guy on a seat only fare who was super grumpy because his bag was so big it didn't fit in a Q300 overhead bin so he had to use his legroom under his seat.

You miss this entertainment sitting down the back. 😂
