Storm Gabrielle

So I’m currently in NZ and watching Gabrielle as we’re meant to be driving around North Island for a few days before flying AKL-BHE on Wednesday. Looks like for the second time my plans visit Coromandel are going to get squashed (had to cancel in 2017 due to the cyclone just before Easter). Wondering if anyone has a likely timeline for cancellations from Air NZ with the storm coming? Do they try to cancel a bit ahead of time, or leave it as late as possible…?

Cheers!

It depends how bad it is looking and the probability of it affecting an airport.

There is an article from Friday indicating they may be moving planes to safer airports due to the expected wind this time compared with the other storms recently. So may see earlier cancels.

Air NZ may fly planes to safety before Cyclone Gabrielle hits - Foran https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/progr...lle-hits-foran

Right now there is still a lot of uncertainty about the weather - the different models still aren't aligning so it's probably going to be at least another 12-24 hours before forecasters really have some certainty of exactly what is likely to happen.

Got an alert that my 8.05 am to ZQN from AKL has been delayed. 12/2. Fully flexi. Directed to view the delay and take option of change/credit/rebook. Just get an oooops sorry page. Can not access booking and need to call to make changes.

Sort of counter productive really. Now on hold for over 30 minutes with no option of a call back.

Frustration much.

We have made the following cancellations to our schedule:

  • All flights to or from Kerikeri and Whangarei between midday Sunday and Tuesday morning have been cancelled
  • The last flights on Sunday night into Hamilton and Tauranga have been cancelled
  • All turboprop flights to, from or through Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga from midday tomorrow through to midday Monday have been cancelled
* Tomorrow should be read as Sunday. (They really shouldn't be using tomorrow in comms).

My reading of it Turbofan flights will be continuing.

Yeah high call volumes and the queue would be growing faster than they can process. Makes sense that thye turn call back off, as it would make things worse not better when they have a growing queue.

I'd expect travel disruption on Wednesday as well.

1 hour 30 min, less than I expected, no offer to call back. Very helpful changing bookings once on the phone.

In this article they say to contact them by WhatsApp. Does anyone know how to do that?

1 hour 40 mins still on hold with Air NZ listening to music. Jetstar was much easier, I was able to find someone on chat and get a voucher to rebook (since O-D changed) within 45 minutes.

Was 2 hours this morning - at the time they told me the earliest they could get my wife and I home (Singapore-Auckland) was 19th (meant to be tomorrow, 14th). I told them I would get another carrier.

Spent some time looking and realised that was easier said than done, so rerung them again and it took them 3.75 hours to answer. This time however they had magically found two seats on the 15th so booked them.

Unfortunately my travel mates that were also on the 14th flight from Singapore are being told the 9th of March is the first time they can get them home...... Almost a month??!

I have been on 2 two hour holds and had to hang up without being able to speak to anyone. My domestic flights - non-flex- are outside the travel waiver window and booked separately, but I've had to rearrange my incoming international flights by 4 days due to the cyclone. So I need to rearrange my domestic flights. Should I expect any flexibility from Air NZ or just write off the tickets? When I try to to change my booking online I basically get the same price as booking a fresh set of tickets.
