Upgrade certs required

I tried to apply a comp upgrade from flexi Y to J on the AKL-JFK flight and its quoting two upgrades needed. Its been so long since I have used these, has it always been that way? Somehow I thought it was only one upgrade or is that only to the next class? Or is that only the short haul ones that go direct to J?

Long haul RU one class upgrade.

Yes the SHRU is a 2 class upgrade.

Back in the days of no PE long haul upgrades were Y->J. It’s been quite a while!

In 2003 I was able to upgrade AKL-HKG and then HNL-AKL (Y-J) on the comfy B767 with old recliner style seating in J.

Route was AKL-HKG-BKK-KIX-HNL-AKL. Fun days…

Thanks for clarifying, I was wondering if they had a special rule or something on the JFK flight!

I have applied for a Y-J upgrade on certs for AKL-JKF in a few weeks applying two certs

Couple of questions.

1. Can I opt to upgrade to Y+ if J doesn't clear, and if so how can I opt into that? (Havent decided if this is worthwhile given that apparently Y loading on that flight is quite light and Y+ is full)
2. Is there any way to apply the same upgrades to a return flight if they don't clear for the outbound or do I have to wait?

1. No easy way to do this. I had 2 failed attempts in June (no status), and I think that double upgrades mean you are behind all those going PE-J and are not automatically concurrently considered for only Y-PE. Friends advised mento let lounge and gate staff know I would be happy for PE if double upgrade to J failed. But that seemed a wholly manual process.

2. You have to wait for the lodged RU to be redeposited. 3-5 days in my case.
