I don't think that is very fair, decrying Air NZ as a bad option to Europe, given they literally don't fly to Europe. Imagine comparing taking SQ or EK to America to Air NZ, that would hardly be fair. Yes, you can do it, but no, they aren't exactly set up for it.

Actually, I am more likely to consider another carrier to any destination now, Europe or otherwise, where I wouldn’t have once … the point I intended to make being that the way the airline seems to be managed nowadays has lead to my change of previously virtually blind loyalty.

Air NZ is a total joke right now. They're charging almost $2000 round trip across the tasman and haven't had an ex AU sale once since April. They then further cut flights meaning prices will stay high for another 6 months at least.
This week I flew AU to NZ for ~$200 round trip on a Jetstar sale and Qantas is freqently ~$600 round trip (regular price pre covid). I just wonder how much more they can get away with the robbery.
Once EK returns to CHC in November, China Airlines (BNE-AKL shortly) plus Air Asia shortly joining the SYD-AKL route I can't see Air NZ able to get away with the constantly high prices but at the same time they'll have less supply then ever before.

China Airlines is currently selling a 3x weekly service in October, there is a break in November/December and then they're selling 3x weekly from 3 Jan 2023.

Edit - looks like the flight schedules page on the the website may be updated to reflect the 'revised' schedules, well for my flight it is showing same day different time

Well NZ just down-gauged a 789 to 321 SYD-AKL on 8 Nov and I have been bumped from J to Y.
I was in J under a THAI ticketed code-share (NZ102 / TG4825), on an TG*G upgraded ticket TG ticket, itself resurrected from an Apr 2020 BKK-AKL.
Little can be done as NZ won’t touch the THAI issued ticket, and TG won’t put me onto NZ104 as it doesnt have a TG codeshare. They were also adamant that the flight should only have had their Gold upgrade applied to the BKK-SYD sector and not the SYD-AKL sector as well.
The AirNZ agent sympathised and acknowledged that their down-gauging had caused this problem, but could not assist given the complexity of this ticket.
Unfortunate, but nothing can be done given the originally paid fare is flexible economy.
PS. Whilst the website states the type is now 321, the seat map is not available. EF still shows the 789 seat map.

Ive booked two QF first Auckland to Sydney to London RTN for next year - both are $2K cheaper than NZ in Business both via LA or Singapore on the dates I need to travel. Actual travel time even with the TT bit is still either the same or less than an hour longer. Obviously NZ are selling their $16-18K business fares to London, but QF first vs a mix of NZ and UA business..... hardly a difficult choice.

Think this was poorly quoted and now people are getting the wrong end of the stick.
My recollection of the interview Foran clarified that a flight is cancelled so everyone on flight needs to rebook. It is just the rebooking that happens in status & fare bucket order. Pretty sure this is also a *A rule in their handbook.
Thought that was always one of bug benefits of status that you are front of the queue in IRROPs.
Suppose other option would to handle IRROPs in booking order which A doesn't align with *A and B the customer who bring in money to airline are likely to be booking later particularly for domestic (more last minute travel), so shouldn't you look after better customers first?

In my experience when an actual downgrade happens get the fare difference or change flight. That was during the 787 issues. Even got a Operational upgrade to Business because of no PE as Boeing's 777 they dry leased didn't have PE.

Though in the above is it a downgrade? Is it just a upgrade not clearing? That is the risk when put in an upgrade that might not get the upgrade.

For example if you booked Y 6 months out, it’s typically cheaper than 1 month out when your flight is changed.

I've been downgraded from J to Y on Trans Tasman in Feb 23 due to being changed to A320 Neo. Called up and explained the situation, another flight goes 2 hours later, wouldn't put me on that flight as the class I booked in "J" isn't available. Asked to talk to supervisor unwilling to assist. Airnz use to be good to deal with it's now gone to the pack! QF here I come with a status match!
