New Zealand has opened discussion with Australia at reopening the border

This is nice news. Previously Australia indicated they wouldn't be open to a Trans Tasman border discussion for a long time, but with both of our countries rapidly lowering cases each day, discussion has opened up: https://i.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/121229177/coronavirus-australian-pm-scott-morrison-says-open-border-with-new-zealand-being-discussed

It sounds like they are discussing a travel situation where there would be no quarantine, and no testing either.

I'd be so excited, I would be tempted to fly to Auckland just to then fly to Australia on a big plane. And I admit, I probably have a problem

As pathetic as it sounds I’m with you.
I was already thinking about trying to squeeze in a Perth trip - could probably achieve the same work wise in Sydney, but wanting to sit on a LH plane!

But as Air NZ has grounded the B777, would not be on NZ, unless a B787 is cranked up

I suspect TT flights would be on B737/A320 aircraft, not matter which airlines fly TT
For me when MEL-CHC starts or MEL-XXX-CHC I will be looking.

Edit
abc.net,au Travel ban will be last coronavirus restriction lifted

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said when we do relax border closures it’s likely to involve New Zealand.“
Now, if there is any country in the world with whom we can reconnect with first, undoubtedly that’s New Zealand. And we have similar trajectories,’’ he said.

“Their restrictions have been far greater. Our case response has, you know, been the same, if not better than New Zealand. So if there’s any country where we can look to achieve that, then I would have thought New Zealand would be the obvious candidate and that’s the nature of discussions we’ve had.”

Sadly you are probably right. Do you think Qantas open up their big planes to Perth?

Perth would probably be high on my list, because I haven't been before. But Brisbane would be nice to escape winter cold too...

Who know when?
I suspect the QF B330's will be parked for many months. The A380's even longer

Would love this to be so, but govt is to risk adverse to go down this track in short to medium term so will be sometime before TT starts on a reasoable basis.

Selfish for a moment. I'd love that. Got a trip booked - for November - which Ive assumed* is not going to happen...

* That way I can be pleasantly surprised if it does!

My previous 777 AKL - MEL in mid May has been swapped out to a 787. Will likely be taking up the offer of a credit though...May is too early for our comfort.

From what Im reading from AirNz staff on Twitter, the 787s are still being utilised...but sure, theyll prob use the 320 or 321 as well.

cant see the QF 737s getting much love from kiwis unless theyre super cheap.

Ha I would probably pay for an 777/787 flight right now that just flew AKL-Australia-AKL as joy flight in J, even if you had to stay on the plane and return back to AKL.

I've never liked the B737, but put up with them for F lounge. That ground experience is what I miss most.

Great. I was booked to go to PER this weekend with confirmed upgrades Seeing those little quokkas on Rottnest and Swan valley wine tour was on my to-do list
If this goes ahead, will re-book late spring as too cold for me during winter.

In Europe, the discussion is re-opening international travel to certain countries that have indicated they will accept tourists (like Greece) in July and to have a July-September tourist season, before everyone goes home and hopes there isn't a second winter wave.

Perhaps then that might be our timeline: if all goes to plan, travel around the South Pacific resuming from July. Many Australians would be interested in coming over for a quick ski season, and plenty of New Zealanders would be interested in traveling to a warmer climate!
