NZ409 Auckland to Wellington - Mon 3/2

I've just got a txt / email / alert in my Air NZ phone app:
Kia ora "Trumpkin",

Air New Zealand wishes to advise that due to engineering requirements, there has been a change to the aircraft scheduled to operate your flight, NZ409 from Auckland to Wellington on Monday, 03 February.

As this aircraft has reduced capacity, to make your flight more comfortable, we are offering online booking flexibility; should you wish to change to an alternative service of the same routing. You can make this change, free of charge, via the Air New Zealand mobile app, or the View and Manage Booking button below.

Please keep in mind that all flights are subject to availability.

We look forward to welcoming you on board.

Noho ora mai,
L’Amour

The originally scheduled aircraft was an A321 (since it showed as having WiFi onboard) and it is most likely going to be replaced with an A320.

Am I right in assuming that the message is trying to get people to change flights to try to avoid people having to be bumped?

If people do need to be bumped, would this be in the order:
  1. Anyone missing the check in close deadline
  2. No status
  3. Jade
  4. Silver
  5. Gold
  6. Elite
  7. EP1 (although there are probably not enough EP1s to fill an A320)
Where would Koru fit into this order?

My guess (and hope) is Koru would be lower than *G and higher than NZ*S

  1. Anyone missing the check in close deadline
  2. No status
  3. Jade
  4. *S
  5. Silver
  6. Koru
  7. *G
  8. Gold
  9. Elite
  10. EP1

Why does it sound (to me) that it is NZ doing you the favour and not the other way round in their communication?

I would have assumed any earned status would be above bough status.
