Beyond the banked year

Hi everyone

Sorry that this may have been asked before, but I am in an interesting situation.

It is likely that I am going to hit my bank year this membership year (thanks to some unplanned travels for work) and I wonder what would happen to the Status Points beyond the banked year? Would I assume that what I have got beyond the banked year would be rolled over for the next? And if it is, would the NZ metal portion be capped at 1400 that is needed for a banked year and the reminder be counted in the year after?

Many thanks

I am in that position every year and frequently get the 3000 gift, which is generally not worth having- last year I received a case of mostly Koru lounge reds.
The SPs beyond the banked year don't roll over into the next year, basically regard all points beyond the banked year as wasted.

Edmm is right. I got caught with this one year as I was expecting multiple banked years. There are gifts at 3000, 5000, 7500 status points etc (according to the website this continues up to 12,500 but presumably if you manage to fly more Air NZ would keep the gifts coming 😎). If you’re regularly flying that much you’re better off spreading your travel and trying to get One World status (or Emirates, if you’re going via the Middle East - I don’t recommend Qatar as they have devalued their programme and getting rewards is hard (check the QR forum and see what posters there say) too). Then you can book flights based on price and schedule.

Agree. I have spread my loyalty between NZ and QF as the two alliances cover most of what I need (UK/Tasman/US and Asian flying). It took me 9 years to accumulate enough for lifetime Gold with QF, and I have 8 banked years with NZ which I am planning to use in my retirement when I won't be flying as often and will be paying for myself.

thank you all for your responses - and for me, I do not think I will get too much beyond the banked year, I will adjust my credit card though so it will go to other schemes.
I wish NZ does life Gold like QF and good on you @CHCflyer!
The difference for me is if I decide I should hit that bank year where I can use it anytime in the future (but with no roll over) or I will just keep that just within the edge so next year will be a breeze....

I'll be getting the 3000 elite gift this year. I don't want a case of wine. Are they still giving out an extra upgrade as an option?

They did late last year, as well as dinners or accommodation in various places, none of which were any use to us, being in "main centres" or overseas cities where we don't travel to. We don't use our upgrades anyway, so an extra one is of no use, so I usually get the wine, but the quality has deteriorated.
I could (and probably should) split my earning and go QF gold or platinum as well, but I can't be bothered with the hassle.

the BBC reported that the average age of death after retirement at 65 is 18 months so two banked years is enough for lifetime as an elite ... :-)

I play in 3 main airline 'home' loyalty programmes, but participate in another 6. I prefer to spread my flying around mainly to give me flexibility with regards to pricing, schedule, airlines etc and I'm a bit nosey as to what other carriers have on offer.

I think the cost of obtaining a banked year is far more than just buying Koru club when no longer frequent flying and there's a senior discount for when you hit that magic age hence I never pursued banked years. There are no additional benefits between elite and banked year unlike the journey from Jade to Elite with 5 RUs and a shorthaul RU. Asiana offer lifetime *A status if you want to divert some flying there but they're apparently struggling a bit at the moment.

I'm not a big fan of the Qantas programme except for the fact it allows earn & burn with both Emirates, Qatar and other one world carriers. It feels relatively easy to earn status or at least gold with Qantas. As for their points, I don't value them at all. I felt robbed just paying the taxes for using them on a recent redemption! Apart from flying not as many opportunities to earn points on the ground like there are in Oz and you need a tonne of points for redemptions which are going up. They're supposed to be increasing availability but you'll be competing against a large Australian population that can earn via credit card sign ups and other means. They can earn points just for walking. Lifetime status on offer but I think something you aim for once you get close. I don't know if people aim for it from scratch.
Qantas are also incredibly stingy with partner earn. eg Qatar departing east coast Oz/NZ. I now credit partner one world flights to either BA or AA for points at least. There are some tricks to still obtaining status benefits whilst accruing to non status FFP. Actually at the BA lounge I had my non status FF# on the BP and just showed my Qantas card for entry. Easy.

Depending on your flying patterns I'd look at AA and BA for one world FFPs. Living outside the US you don't need the dollar spend requirement, so I think sectors or distance is all you need to look at. AA points are easy to buy, top up (only buy with the really good sales) and I think you can get some amazing value from them flying Asia, Europe or even to Australia west coast. BA points predominantly good for short haul under a certain distance. Need 4 BA flights for One world sapphire. No hard expiry of points in either programme and easy enough to extend even if not flying. For BA earn the rest of the tier points with a single Qatar business flight from say Asia/NZ to Western Europe.

I find VA & partners useful.

Part of me has really enjoyed learning about the various programmes but I think lately I'm less enthusiastic. I value the basics of being comfortable on my flight, price, & schedule. I don't like being ripped off on earn so will divert partner earn accordingly. I used to dedicate part of the year to NZ, part to Qantas but became miserable when I was on an aircraft I didn't want to be on just for status credits and the competition were flying a far more comfortable aircraft on the same route. Juggling SP/SC can be a hassle as well. I juggle a bit now as there's no getting around that if you're in more than one FFP but it's nowhere near the headache it used to be and I'm happy with the flexibility, freedom it gives me. I don't feel locked in at all.

Anyway, I'd recommend considering a one world programme. I can't remember if AA are offering status challenges still, but Qantas have one which might shorten the journey, then just retain although it's at their discretion whether they offer it to you based on your current patterns and a well worded email.

I used to obsess over programs and tried to get status with however many I could. Now I pick flights for other reasons, and Air New Zealand usually has the best times to fly for me to my most travelled destinations.

Elite is extremely different from Koru. I make heavy use of my APDs. That's why I want to bank my years.

I agree. My other FFP is with AA as I travel a fair amount domestically within the US and AA has non stops flights on the route I travel (vs. United)

After about 6 return domestic US flights in F in 2017 - 2018, I was given AA Gold status this year for 6 months as part of a promotion.
While Gold status (compared to the other higher statuses) doesn't give you much in return if you're in the U.S, it came in very handy during my recent travels to Spain and Morocco & I was flying a One World Carrier - lounge access, priority boarding, check in & baggage for me and my companion. Happy days !

Yeah, AA is my Oneworld partner. It's the Oneworld airline I fly the most unfortunately (I genuinely dislike flying domestically in the US) & they have lots of reward options with cheap miles to buy. Gold status does very little unfortunately but at least it gives me more security that I won't be the one bumped for an overbooking...
