Star alliance reward bookings

Hi there,

Ive tried booking two flights on the Star alliance reward booking system. DCA-IAH and IAH-SYD. Has anyone else had luck with booking two seperate star alliance flights on one ticket number. The call centre say they can't be on the same ticket... therefore no baggage and more importantly no rebook if the first flight is delayed....

United say they can link them and verbal guarantee of rebook (in J) if the first United (Y) flight is delayed and baggage will be tagged through... 3.5 hours connection time in IAH.

Anyone have any experience of this please?

Thanks

United will interline bags with anybody if you you're *G to use premier access.

They will even interline with NZ on split PNRs on same day tickets.

UA's current policy is that they will interline any *A carriers even on separate tickets. You don't need status.

However recent experience is they will only interline bags with a connection shorter than 12 hours even on the same ticket.

Thanks, the bag interline situation is nice but not essential. More concerned if there is a delay with the first flight, technically theyre on seperate ticket and the second flight is a longer one. Anyone had experience of being looked after in this situations. The UA call centre said they'd rebook me into J but Im wary of what was said on a call centre and real life experiences.

On the plus side SYD/IAH and LAX/SFO -SYD/MEL has plenty of award availability atm in J in May/June

You may want to ask on the UA forum about being looked after by UA with missed connections.

If the cabin is sold out in J or filled up with other upgrades I don't fancy your chances of being looked after. There have been paid J customers on NZ and other forums that have been downgraded to Y because there was no J available on the following flight so you're left with the choice of getting to your destination in Y the next day or waiting 2 or more days for the next J availability. There is also the hassle of accommodation and whether they cover you if Y is available the next day but you want to wait an extra day or 2 for J to become available. Being an award flight, they'll probably look after the paid pax and their own award pax first.

You could pay for award J on both flights to get both tickets on same PNR but I'm not convinced that would alter the outcome if you missed your long haul flight.

I am risk averse so would leave a good long connection, have a back up flight or 2 in mind you could pay for to still arrive for your long haul on time. There are insurance options that cover award flights as well. Check weather and if you can change your ticket to depart earlier to miss weather then do so. Otherwise a safe connection time is the best option.

In principle, why couldn't Air NZ book the requested award flights for the route DCA-IAH-SYD (assuming availability) with mixed cabin classes - presumably at the higher rate for the Y sector?

It might be cheaper to fly in First on ANA than book 2 separate itineraries on UA

Thanks for the help.

Ive posted on the UA forum.

NZ when I called them said they were unable to put both flights on the same ticket.

The DCA-IAH was only available in Y

ANA??!

Have booked a refundable early morning flight DCA-IAH if it looks like problems.

Insurance will cover Ive checked but will await what the UA forum says. The UA helpline said they will rebook in J even if a day or two later (I have time)
Thanks

No idea on your dates, but you can do DCA-ORD-HND-SYD

Airpoints redemption is sector based. Your routing would likely cost double.
