Air NZ to replace 777-200ER with 787-10
Air New Zealand announces multi-billion-dollar investment in new fuel-efficient Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners
Air New Zealand has today announced significant investment in its international network and customer experience with commitments to purchase eight Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner aircraft powered by GE Aviation’s GEnx-1B engines.
Interesting I thought they discounted the 787-10 because it did not have the range they needed.

Makes obvious sense to go with Boeing for so many reasons so I don't think too many people here will be surprised.
Although I do wonder how much of a say the govt had on choosing Boeing for diplomatic reasons: US anti aircraft carriers parked outside our exclusion zone and the US making noises about NZ comprising US interests by not ordering Boeing planes.
New J class hard product design should be interesting.

NZ Government own 53% of Air NZ.
Politics has always had a big part in ordering of aircraft for many decades.
Far more than engineering considerations (~engine choice?)
[ hull ~33% --- engine ~33% --- avionics ~33% ]

The only reason the Govt came up was.
The purchase is of a size it needs a shareholder vote.
The Govt holds over >50% and have said support the vote
So a yes vote is a given
So between now and the vote (September) there is no sharemarket uncertainty so the share price will be more stable

At least they can design the new business class for the 787 rather than poorly retrofit the seat designed for the 777 and making it too narrow to fit the 787 like it is now

In 3-4-3? one of the article did mention NZ was developing an new 'innovated' Y Class product for the 78J, last time they said that it was 3-4-3 on the 77W........
If you can do 2-4-2 in an 763 or 3-3-3 in an A330, I would hate to think what NZ could do on an 789.

The 787-10 had been the only serious contender for quite some time. With the new HGW option (that increases MTOW) the aircraft has significantly greater range than the current -10 models in operation.
The 789 will do EWR but it's is going to be a long flight though stuck in economy!

It means we won't see the new Business seats until 2023. How will they remain competitive is a big question for such a long time with all the reverse herringbone products coming from North American and Asian carriers!

The seats on the 777s are becoming well worn, and slick of paint isn’t going to help that, if they aren’t going to clean them.
