Power outlets on economy Air NZ B777-300
Hello, Has anyone flown NZ0001 from LAX-AKL on economy and can tell me about the power outlet situation? I’m trying to know if it’s just a USB port or if it’s a full-blown power outlet. Thanks in advance! |

USB power on the screen's is pathetic.
Recently flew a Cathay Pacific 777 which only had a USB port on the screen - charging my phone from 20% to 100% took almost 4 hours. Meanwhile on other aircraft with power sockets (and a fast charger) the speed is 50 minutes for the same charge even my laptop (not fast charging) is around 2.5 hours. I haven't been on the new A321/A320 neo's yet but the old A320 trans tasman fleet had the same poor charging speed. |
The USB-A ports on pretty much every IFE deployment are a total waste of time - they output 500mA max, and because it's so low many devices won't even draw that. My testing has shown charge speeds of around 300mAh on multiple devices meaning you're looking at around 10 - 12 hours to charge a typical phone.
The new USB-C ports on the neo output 5/9/12/15/20V PD up to a maximum of 27W so will fully charge a modern Android or iPhone at maximum speed which is around 15W - 18W depending on the device. Ironically despite the iPhone not having a USB-C connector, the only way to fast charge an current gen iPhone at maximum speed is to use a PD capable charger and a USB-C to Lightning cable. |
