If it suited your arrangements, and there was availability on the day, then it could be possible to fly HKT-BKK on an earlier service. You’d probably need to be prepared to head out to HKT early, or even try contacting THAI a day or so earlier to change flights.
TG have been good to me with disrupted travel, although I’m TG*G. Although not the same situation as an award tix, I was booked in J AKL-BKK on an upgraded Y ticket which went tech on arrival at AKL, and so THAI rebooked me into full C onto NZ to HKG, thence CX J to BKK.

Given current Covid-19 situation would rather not spend 5 hours wandering around an airport
UPDATED: Sorry i looked again it was sorting flights by price, when I look by time there are other flights but they seem to be Thai smile flights, which don't have J (not that I care so much about that) but do you think they will allow me to change to a Thai Smile flight and move to Y?

thanks sorry that wasn't my question I wasn't very clear. I am not expecting miles, just concerned that they would still treat this as if I had a paid J ticket and re-accommodate me on the next flight in J
(as opposed to say when one has a mileage upgrade and the class is not gauranteed if flight goes IRROPs)

Not sure what happens with mileage upgrades as I imagine it varies from airline to airline but I would expect to be treated the same although I can understand sometimes airlines prioritise those with a paid ticket.

TG are very good and unless there is a serious delay, you’ll be fine as they may hold the aircraft and escort you through the transfer process at BKK.
