Was it a A321NEO or one of the ex ETOPS A320CEOs? As the order for domestic is A321NEO only and isn't due for a while yet. And by September the ETOPS A320CEOs will be on domestic.
Sure there will be staff familiarisation and positioning flights but not sure they would be scheduling those this early.

Just a row 1 in September on a domestic flight I think is more likely to be an ETOPS A320CEO opposed to a A320NEO.

I assumed 320NEO as the seatmap on the booking page matched that of the 320NEO on the seatmap page - specifically the ability to select row 1DEF.

My understanding that the NEOs currently doing domestic are staff familiarisation, positioning, fillers etc Come Sept there will be the ETOPS A320CEOs will be properly part of the domestic fleet so will cover the extra capacity. Staff/airport familiarisation will not be a thing when the NEO fleet is bigger and regularly flying out of all the cities.

Remember there are two A320ceo seat maps - the A320R and A320D.
A320D has 1ABC but no 1DEF (starts at 2 on right hand side), A320R has 1ABC and 1DEF
A320neo has no 1ABC (has a bulkhead on this side and starts at 2) but has 1DEF.
A320D has 1ABC but no 1DEF (starts at 2 on right hand side), A320R has 1ABC and 1DEF
A320neo has no 1ABC (has a bulkhead on this side and starts at 2) but has 1DEF.

You'd need to check the NZ fleet info in their reports but I'm pretty sure from memory the A320R aircraft that are joining the domestic fleet aren't being returned until 2022. The whole 7 A321neo for domestic won't be here until 2024.

@tr3k the version with 5cm recline in row 11 is the A320R international https://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/seat...rbus-a320-168i

I was looking at some TT flights and just realized that NZ uses all economy class planes for flights that range from 3 to 5.5 hours which means 3.5 to 6 hours in your seat.
They do offer to block a middle seat, that’s as enticing as their Taupo beef offering (no pun intended).
Canadian market uses the same or similar narrow body aircraft for similar and shorter length routes, but all have a business class cabin in a 2-2 configuration, 38”, decent recline and business class service.
Surely Kiwis and Ozzie’s could fill 12-16 business class seats at a premium price, or FFs burn APDs and RUs
How can NZ remain competitive for the premium market when they have limited business class TT options?

The widbodies often align with the NA flights to provide PE and J for the entire journey.
