Has happened here with Skywest operating a flight for Delta a couple of years ago. https://www.ksl.com/article/33871824

As I thought. Someone in Ops missed that NZQ wasn't yet approved for China.

Pretty much the same as the Trent issues. Has he been on record about the Trents other than Investor Day?

yes true, but would the China authorities have been empowered to make an exception if they wished and allow it to land? Could there be political reasons for this?

It's China. I doubt it. They're real sticklers for their processes, especially where their "national security" is involved.

Can't we have a conspiracy theory, there appears to be some low level flexing of muscle, China seems irritated with NZ at the moment

Have heard exporters having issues with "Company-Name" Vs "Company Name" on their paperwork. Frontline staff are not empowered to make judgement calls.

Perhaps the paperwork for NZQ's approval (generally, not in relation to this specific flight) made reference to Taiwan, which meant that the approval was held up on the Chinese side. Air NZ then precipitated the problem by allocating NZQ to operate a PVG flight when approval hadn't yet come through for it?
