The mystery of Flight 999

Anyone know what’s going on with the aircraft I’m on?

Call it a Xmas quiz perhaps

Four hour time difference, Queensland to NZ?

ZK-NCC? CNS-AKL?

But time to land and altitude don't seem right.

I'm guessing revenue flight Sydney to Auckland?

No idea why the 999 though. What does your boarding pass say?

Oops looked at the wrong city for 4hr time difference but in retrospect I don't think Sydney gets to a 4 hr time difference. That and my phone says its only 2 hrs currently with Brisbane at 3hrs. They're the only 2 I can think of that get in at 2359.

I took a few 789/77W flights from NZAA-NZCH and apparently we were operating NZ99 to KLAX (as one example).

No cigars yet, not even a soggy butt..

Clue: at time of photo, we were ascending.
Probably not very helpful, but I know this thread is full of aviation gurus...😀

mmm, A domestic flight, say Auckland to Wellington, on one of the international 320s with the wrong locations set in the system.
Once went from WLG to AKL with a destination in the Middle of the Pacific, AAA.
But that's only a couple of hours adrift from NZ so still a bit of a puzzle.

Assuming ascent is in the initial climb, and you are passing 5000' then you have only been airborne for 3-5 mins.
If the time to destination of 47 minutes is correct, then total flight time is under 60 minutes.
If the times at dest and origin are correct, the flight is generally East
i.e. Dest is 4 hrs ahead of Origin

To cover 4 hours of time zone in an hour, going East, at the equator requires 40000/6 = 6,666 km/hr (not possible)

So this could only be possible at very high/low latitudes...perhaps from one Antarctic strip to another?

If total flight time is ~50min. Think AKL-WLG is about the only that fits?

Hmm east Coast Australia is 16 hours difference Zanesville. no Can't make it work... Assuming 999 and ZZV both maximum values in system as you fly akl wlg.

Yingkou, which I think has the last ICAO code aphabetically at ZYYK, is a frustrating 5 hours difference to NZ.

Does it cross the international date line?
The date at origin and destination could be different.

My guess is that NZ999 crosses the date line and the flight is longer than the IFE display shows.
IFE just calculates the time to arrival as the difference between time at origin and time at destination and ignores complications around the extra/missing day

Some very good sleuthing...

NZ446, Fri 14th, WLG-AKL.
The destination was a mysterious airfield called BB, middle of Minnesota.
The beautiful tropical atoll of AAA also showed on the map, but we didn’t stop there.
My first trip on a 320R, quite a nice aircraft.
Flight departed almost 1 hr late, ensuring the fullest Wgtn Lounge I’ve experienced.
We then sat on tarmac at AKL for around 30mins waiting for lightning to clear.
My 5th domestic flight this week, I’m a bit over it, but need another 120 SP by Feb 1 to retain *G.
Looks like I’ll have to “buy” 100 from the Co. Above & Beyond account (I finish up 4th Jan) to scrape in.
Merry Xmas all!
