It might be because Emirates has the largest 77W fleet and they probably have a substantial inventory of 77W parts.

Let's not forget that time an EK 345 failed to get airbourne at MEL, and smashed through approach lights and navigation systems at the end of the runway (along with its own tail). Or the QR 773 that took out approach lights at MIA and then continued for 13.5 hours with a half metre gash in the fuselage of the cargo hold.

I thought it was general practice that inventory permitting, almost all airlines will sell/lend parts to the others at need, right?

The Emirates aircraft at MEL did, just, manage to get airborne. This event was remarkable in that the crew managed to fly away and recover from a near-disasterous situation. In short, they had under calculated the fuel on board by 100 tonnes, so the reduced power takeoff went very poorly indeed.....

I just read Qantas ground crew damaged a KC-135 at Sydney yesterday. That's got to be a little bit embarrassing.

Has anybody actually seen any mention anywhere of exactly what happened?

At this point, NZ is lucky there don't fly here too. Nice slice there in the first photo.

Given the extraordinary number of flights and ground movements everyday day globally, and that human error will always exist, it follows that there will be events like this happening from time-to-time. Certainly, there will have been many more near misses.

Sensors on cars for parking and lane departures sure hasn't eliminated car v car/building/tree events....
Cars I expect alcohol, speed, fatigue and a bit of stupidity to play a part. Bit much for sensors to overcome completely. Yet planes I suspect complacency or inattention to be bigger factors in these incidents. Better odds for an annoying sensor to be successful. There's got to be something better than the current system.

NZ herald reported WOW was being towed (into the gate by looks of things). https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/...ectid=12159981

That 'slice' looks like it was reasonably far along the wing. Looks way more than say a hand breadth.

To be clear, the slice is not on the wing, rather on the underside of the elevator (control surface) attached at the rear of the tailplane, look like the port (left) side.

If indeed it was a WOW A330, then perhaps the winglet of the WOW aircraft is what has cut the tidy track into the elevator of NZ's aircraft.

This part??

This seems worse to me. That must have been some angle that WOW aircraft came in on. It can't have been coming in parallel to clip that part as it never would have cleared the wing. I'm not sure how perpendicular those winglets are to the wing but the picture of the 'slice' looks close to 45 degrees. Crazy...

Yes.

The entire tailplane is also known as the horizontal stabiliser, and the elevator is the moveable control surface. Your pic is of a B747.

I expect the WOW was being towed, and its wingtip simply 'clipped' the underside of the 777's elevator as it passed by.
