Transit Visa requirement at Auckland

Looking to guidance please.

My mother is a Canadian Permanent Resident with PR card, with Indian Passport, travelling to Australia with approved Australia Visitor Visa. Planning to book Air New Zealand, with transit at AKL.
Was told there is no transit visa requirement on the way to Australia. However, she would need a transit visa to transit through AKL on the way back from Australia to Canada.
Is this true?

Planning to give Air New Zealand the short shrift if this is true - can't be bothered with the added hassles. (was really looking forward to flying them)
Thanks in advance for the advice.

Yeah - that too straight from a New Zealand consular official in Ottawa.

I would do a bit off investigating before I ditched the AirNZ option

I think previously/currently the requirement for a NZ transit visa for Indian passport holder may be overriden by the fact of having an Australian visa

There was also discussion a whilke back, of removing transit visa requriements for Indian passport holders

Obviously needs some investigation as to the current situation

it looks like the advice could be correct: https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-...a/transit-visa

"If you’ll be passing through New Zealand as a transit passenger, you’ll need to apply for a Transit Visa before you travel, unless you’re travelling to Australia, or are from a visa waiver country or transit visa waiver country, and you meet our requirements for good character."

So travelling from Australia via NZ is not included?

Some links in the wiki of ===>Smartgate at Australia & NZ immigration

The Canadian Permanent Resident on an Indian Passport may make it easier or harder.
Air NZ will deny boarding if the passport-visa is not in order

Airlines use TIMATIC. But do not rely on information from faceless people on a random web site(~FT)

I would rate what the NZ Consulate says

Timatic results are little confusing but sounds like need Visa

https://www.timaticweb.com/cgi-bin/t...&subuser=NZB2C
Visa required, except for Passengers transiting through
Auckland (AKL) with a confirmed onward ticket for a flight to
a third country within 24 hours. They must:
- continue their journey to Australia, and
- have a visa issued by Australia, and
- stay in the international transit area of the airport.
The ands mean all must be meet. They are not continuing to Aussie, so need Visa for the return. You have a corner case that isn't really covered. I guess this is not normally an issue as people will be heading home from Aussie or Aussies going to NA and Aussies don't need to worry too much about visas in NZ.

Correct. Need a Transit Visa for the return leg, from MEL to YYZ, via AKL.

If they held a Canadian passport it doesn't appear to need a transit visa

Truly bizarre visa rules. So you can fly one way without a visa but for the return journey you need one? I suspect its a cock-up in the drafting.

True, It is the Indian passport, no matter if you are a permanent resident of another country.
Which leads to Aussie PRs flying via AKL will need transit visas.
Akin to rules in the USA I think - cannot transit without a US Visa.
