We had some luck last year in mid to late July to Bali and back.
2 of us travelling on one booking (a Gold and an Elite). Upgrade from Y-PE cleated in the Lounge in Wellington on our way to Auckland. Another friend we were travelling with didn’t get theirs on the way over.
On the return leg all 3 of our PE-J requests cleared at the airport when we checked in.

Gifted Elite APD x 2 (1 x gold and 1 x no status recipient)
Never got a outright response via app or email, last update I got via app was 'upgrade requests are still being reviewed and will be confirmed at the gate'
They didn't clear and the reason why was a aircraft change from 77W to 772 (which I actually noticed a few days prior), so dissapointed to finally have a decent upgrade priority chance logged and pretty certain it would have cleared had the aircraft change not happened. Every seat was full (apart from the few sky couch rows which had less than 3 pax)

I gifted my parents two APD elite upgrades
Cleared 7 days out
They have no status, I had been told that being cleared 7 days out was impossible for them, but they had also been cleared 7 days out for other upgrades too so that must not be true.
We had only lodged these upgraded 5-6 weeks ago.
Originally they were booked on an EVA plane. Three days prior they had an Aircraft change to 777-200 and they got moved to new seats with one behind the other.

Outbound cleared 7 days out having being told impossible.
Return cleared at boarding.
