Along with the stellar profit results released, Air NZ is also launching a new route from November 2018, between Auckland (AKL) and Taipei (TPE)

They can't do Mainland-TPE-xxx transfer as Chinese authority won't let them leave without a permit even for airside transit. But the opposite direction is ok. EVA was banking on China relaxing this rule when they launched a bunch of North American routes but for the moment nothing changes.

On a different topic, wondering how CI will respond in this case.

CI's business model in NZ is all about aircraft utilization so they likely won't respond. If yields to AKL and CHC drop to the point it makes sense to park the plane at BNE or MEL all day, they will just cancel or reduce the tag on from Australia.
This won't change until CI has enough A359 in the fleet to allocate 1.5 plane to just AKL-TPE nonstop (read: highly unlikely to happen anytime soon). CHC will always be a tag from somewhere, if it continues.

AKL is pretty low on the list of places for CI to fly direct and from many accounts not that high yielding. To be competitive I would imagine flights for say an economy ticket would have to be below say 1200 NZD.
It would be a good 3/4 years before any chance of CI going direct plus they have B777 which will come off lease in 6 or so years which they have no replacement for. Current A350-900s are just enough to replace the aging A330 cabins.
I would like to see Air NZ do well as its a win for consumers to have more choice.
The arrival time of 4:50pm would allow tag on flights to say Hong Kong , Bangkok or even to Europe. But most mainland destinations have very limited frequency so I doubt that will be have any chance. The big positive is all those Star alliance members in Taiwan (due to Eva) will now have an option to fly direct where the previous best option was probably like Singapore.

NZ already runs direct/non-stop service to HKG (not to mention the alliance/tie-up with CX)
TG already runs direct/non-stop service to BKK (as far as *A goes)
Market to Europe is already ultra competitive, doubt this will really be an option for European connections, at the moment you got SQ via SIN, CA via PVG or PEK, and of course NZ's own services via LAX.
Definitely the positive being a direct *A service/connection between NZ and Taiwan.
