New options showing on AirNZ.co.nz when booking NZ7000 / VA code share flights.

It wouldn't surprise me if an airline somewhere in the world had created an add-on surcharge to avoid sitting in the middle seat!

wouldn't give NZ to many hints, it could be there next enhancement

New benefit for Gold and Elite - guaranteed never in a middle seat.

Silver - one free request to get out of a middle seat

It only seems to work with reward bookings, and not paid bookings

You can call VA and if they are nice they will do it over the phone.

Which is absolutely the wrong way to do it. There is no valid reason in this day and age that you shouldn't be able to select your seat online and have to pick up a phone and talk to a human in some other country. Poor customer experience.

I called up to book and was told the only option was 11A. 4 days out it changed to 4A in the air nz app..

Actually with some of the last minute travel I do, it would be great if I could be guaranteed no middle seat!

Perhaps that could make it easier for the flight attendants to know who's got status and who doesn't. They could treat everybody in the middle seats with less service because they know they're definitely not even silver.

IIRC PMNW used to observe "middle seat Mondays" where elites who weren't upgraded and were flying in middle seats on Mondays received a thousand extra miles.
