I had to let it happen

YES!

Finally a way to get across the (southern) ditch on Star Alliance!

so did that December announcement preclude another US gateway (i.e., was the original post mis-interpreting the rumor of America?)

At this stage, yes.

Grant Bradley writes a lot about aviation, but based on his writing he actually knows very little. It seems that he badly interpreted the "Americas" rumour as North America and ran with it.

I wouldn't however rule out another US destination, Air NZ will have extra 77E capacity later in the year with more Dreamliners arriving, and it is something they have talked a lot about in the past.

Another US destination is the next logical step.

Now we can start the speculation again. Where would be the best place to fly to?

Given that half of Flyertalk already think NZ flies there, how about Alakanuk Airport (AUK), Alaska?

And if there were flights AKL-AUK can you imagine the confusion that could result?

Actually, more Canucks end up accidentally in YXU (London Ontario) when they want LON (London UK; via LGW/LHR from Canada) than end up in the wrong Sydney.

That's funny, I'm sure it happens, but I've never heard of that occurring.

Luckily, YXU to LHR is an easy 1 stop correction, with multiple daily options.

Sydney, NS, Canada to Sydney NSW, Australia is over 17,000 km, and nearly as far away as 2 places can get on the earth.

Either error, I'm sure when people step off the small turbo-prop, they're in for quite a surprise.
