There's a few big old birds hanging around at ROW.

Yes, as well as being a boneyard (particularly for AA), it has a refurbing centre there, used mainly for Boeing craft.

I stumbled upon a photo recently that made me do a bit more digging. Looks like it's still in the old NZ configuration, and someone recently had the fortune(?) of flying it SCL-LAX operating as a LATAM flight.

Looking a bit past its use-by date

Saudia had it for about a year

Looks like it's been doing pilgrimage runs in conjunction with Garuda of late

Wonder if the terrible Thales IFE still actually works? It was a huge effort to make it get it going on all seats on most Air NZ flights!

Had seen another photo of it somewhere recently - and you could see it in the background still with the Interface.

LATAM has wet leased it for the time being. I saw a few pics of it recently and J has been removed from the nose section (replaced by Y) and it seems like J is on the upper deck; which I presume they replaced the Y+ seats in the back half of the upper deck with J seats or it would be a very dense 747..

As I mentioned above, she is now flying under Garuda Indonesia. It has been out of the LATAM fleet since mid July.

I doubt it as the old NZ Business Premier seat was quite heavy and they could not put all BP on the upper deck for that reason. In fact the NZ 747 had to be trimmed to account for the weight of the BP seats, but all aircraft are trimmed in flight so not too big a deal.

Depends on the amount of trimming. Trimming induces drag. Doing weight and balance such that there is no/little trim needed in cruise. Would be best to put the denser cargo in rear hold to offset, so didn't need to trim the plane as much to offset the forward seats being heavy.

Was that the overall weight it couldn't deal with at the front end? Would the replacement of the nose section to Y seats impact that?

Could make a comeback to our shores

A plan to preserve the plane that brought The Beatles to New Zealand was unveiled in Wanaka yesterday.

The Lockheed Electra turboprop formed the backdrop for several well-known photos of The Beatles as they were greeted at the start of their 1964 "invasion'' of New Zealand.
The Electra is now being used by Buffalo Airways in Canada to waterbomb forest fires. But, once it has ended its flying days, Radio New Zealand National presenter, and self-confessed "plane spotter'', Paul Brennan hopes it will end up on static display at the National Transport and Toy Museum, next to Wanaka Airport.Mr Brennan and museum owner Jason Rhodes also want four jet airliners - a Boeing 747, a DC-10, a DC-8 and a Boeing 737 - shipped to New Zealand, restored and put on display.
