Miles Expiration

I know this question most likely has been asked 10 times. However I searched and checked the FAQ. Nothing...

In general miles seem to expire in 36 months. Does the transfer from KLM Flying dutchman to Air France KLM Flying Blue change this?

Example: Last KLM flight on 31.12.2002. Using the 36 month rule the miles should have dissapeared from the account, right? Or is the the correct calculation transfer date into Flying blue plus 36 months or inception of flying blue + 36 months?

Any clues? Thanks!

if you fly once in 36 months, no miles will expire. Pretty good if you compare it to e.g. M+M. NW has a similar rule and they don't let miles expire at all; my guess is that FB will do something similar.

It depends on if you have flown or not since the flight you mentioned...

Everytime you accrue one EQM this prolongs the life of your miles for another 36 months... So there's pretty much no limit if you fly once every 36 months or hold a French FB Gold Amex card...

Miles credited before the inception of FB will not be affected.
Your existing miles are one year young or less.

your miles will not expire, the new expiry range (3 yr) starts with the beginning of FB (June 05). 560 miles could come from a hotel stay @ one of the 2x or 3x specials, same thing for car rentals (look at the current FB offers); easy thing is transferring Amex MR points to FB (if you have Amex MR). Some hotel programs also let you transfer points into miles and depending on where you live, there might be other options. Do you already have the online statement, that gives 1000 bonus miles (but they will only credit after your next transaction). And welcome to the FB board

I just looked in the "Terms and Conditions" for Flying Blue. It contains the following sentence:

1.2.9 After a period of 36 months of no accrual of Level Miles by a Member, the Company reserves the right to cancel the Award Miles. After a period of 36 months of no accrual of Award Miles by a Member, the Company reserves the right to unilaterally terminate the membership

I also found the following entry in the KLM online FAQ:

"Do Award Miles expire?

If you do not fly with a SkyTeam partner for a period of 3 consecutive years then your Award Miles will expire."

That would seem to imply that you have to make a flight once every 36 months, and that mileage accrual from hotels, AmEx, etc. is not good enough. That is actually worse than most FF programs, which allow you to keep the miles active by having any transaction once every 36 months...

Correct. The 'How does it work' page (also) says about Award Miles:
And they remain valid as long as you make a minimum of only one eligible flight every 3 years with KLM, Air France or any other member of the SkyTeam alliance.

Well, this may be true, but asking a FF, ie a Frequent flyer to fly at least once every 36 months does not seem a stringent requirement.
