That's why it seems a bit easier to understand if we talk about only "qualification", not about year. No matter the exact date you have reach PLT the first time, what counts is the amount of status miles the 31st of December. If you qualify PLT 10 times in a row then you get it.
My example is probably the most common pattern, I've been qualified the first time at the very end of the year (12th of December 2009) but it makes no difference if it had been the 15th of February. I'll be PLT4L if qualified 10 times in row so 2009,2010,2011,2012,2013,2014,2015,2016,2017,2018-> Meaning the 31st of December 2018 I must have 90K (70K) status miles to be "qualified" for the 10th time (implying being PLT on the 10th anniversary of the date I've reached PLT for the first time, the 12th of December 2019, but again no difference if it's the 15th of February 2019)
The first year causes the confusion, you are qualified only once a year, the 31st of December. BUT you can enjoy the PLT status as soon as you reach the threshold.
Hope it makes sense and valid

You do not "enjoy" PLT status from the date you qualify, you ARE Platinum from the date you qualify. On your statement, it says "Platinum" as soon as you reach the required number of miles or segments.
Then, the following years, it says "you have been Platinum since 12 December 2009" in your case (no mention of 31st December).
What they ask you to be PLT for life is not to qualify 10 times in a row as you say, even though you get to the same result.
The wording on AF/FB page says you must KEEP Platinum level for 10 years.
In your case, you need to be Platinum on 12 December 2019 (as you say with your calculation). Maybe this amounts to the same as qualifying 10 times...
The question unresolved here is if you qualified between 1st Jan and 31st March (let's say 19 Feb 2009). At the end of the 9th year (if you do not fly enough), you get the grace period of 3 months into the 10th year, so technically, you are still Plat on 19 Feb 2019 (but will not be any more on 1st April 2019).
Would FB say "you have kept your status for 10 years (19 Feb 2009 to 19 Feb 2019)" so you are Plat for life?
According to your system (qualify for 10 years) the answer will be "no"....

Hi,
On my side, I became Platinum on December 2007.
I have just contacted Flying Blue by chat on line to ask when I will become Platinum for Life.
They wrote me that because I qualified for 2017, my status is now Platinum For Life and I will receive my card soon and reflected from 01/04.

They told me I would receive a normal card on 01/04 and later a LTPE card ....
They could not say when it would show on the website.
Let's keep track of the events.
PUBLIC CALL : Anyone here became LTPE last year and remembers how it went?

I am reposting a 2011 post of mine which has already been extensively discussed before and after 2011.
Should there is any question, please go ahead
Here is the theory for a LT qualification :
- dd/mm/n : 1st qualification for Platinum : status/card valid until end of March n+2
- dd/mm/n+1 : 2nd qualification for Platinum : status/card valid end of March n+3
- dd/mm/n+2 : 3rd qualification for Platinum : status/card valid end of March n+4
- dd/mm/n+3 : 4th qualification for Platinum : status/card valid end of March n+5
- dd/mm/n+4 : 5th qualification for Platinum : status/card valid end of March n+6
- dd/mm/n+5 : 6th qualification for Platinum : status/card valid end of March n+7
- dd/mm/n+6 : 7th qualification for Platinum : status/card valid end of March n+8
- dd/mm/n+7 : 8th qualification for Platinum : status/card valid end of March n+9
- dd/mm/n+8 : 9th qualification for Platinum : status/card valid end of March n+10
- dd/mm/n+9 : 10th qualification for Platinum : status/card valid end of March n+11
- dd/March/n+10 : sent of new Plat card valid until end of March n+11 – no mention of LT status in the letter coming with card
- year n+10 : ne need to requalify for Plat
- dd/March/n+11 : whatever the number of level miles made in year n+10, sent of new Plat card valid until end of March n+12 – mention about LT status in the letter coming with the card
Note : Unless one is a very frequent flyer, the (re-)qualification is not likely to happen during the very first months (January or February). Therefore :
- if one (re-)qualifies between March and December 31st n+x, the card sent in March n+x is based on the previous year qualification and should carry an expiry date in March n+x+1 ; that is what is presented above
- if one (re-)qualifies between January 1st and the end of February n+x, the card sent in March n+x is based on the current year qualification and should carry a expiry date in March n+x+2.
Again, what counts is not the card but the number of qualifications in a row.
The only mystery that remains is this one : what if someone fails to requalify between January1st and December 31st n+x but suddenly qualifies between January 1st and March 31st n+x+1? Does he miss one year and should restart a new cycle of 10 qualifications in a row, will he need an extra calendar year to get 10 qualifications in a row or will he bypass the rule?
- dd/mm/n : 1st qualification for Platinum : status/card valid until end of March n+2
- dd/mm/n+1 : 2nd qualification for Platinum : status/card valid end of March n+3
- dd/mm/n+2 : 3rd qualification for Platinum : status/card valid end of March n+4
- dd/mm/n+3 : 4th qualification for Platinum : status/card valid end of March n+5
- dd/mm/n+4 : 5th qualification for Platinum : status/card valid end of March n+6
- dd/mm/n+5 : 6th qualification for Platinum : status/card valid end of March n+7
- dd/mm/n+6 : 7th qualification for Platinum : status/card valid end of March n+8
- dd/mm/n+7 : 8th qualification for Platinum : status/card valid end of March n+9
- dd/mm/n+8 : 9th qualification for Platinum : status/card valid end of March n+10
- dd/mm/n+9 : 10th qualification for Platinum : status/card valid end of March n+11
- dd/March/n+10 : sent of new Plat card valid until end of March n+11 – no mention of LT status in the letter coming with card
- year n+10 : ne need to requalify for Plat

Platinum Since 2008-07-28 is my page, so I'm guessing I need to scrape into next year as Platinum to qualify ?
Frustrating as I had around 8 years as Royal Wing on the old Flying Dutchman scheme, but we stopped using KLM for 18 months, after they lost my bags too regularly !

I think I am now Platinum for Life!
I first made Platinum on 04-SEP-2008 and have re-qualified every year since; as of a few days ago, my balance for this year (2017) is 70,003 level miles (thanks to a significant roll-over from 2016).*
However, when I log into my account on the AF website, I am still informed that I shall be P-F-L after two more years.

* So, I have qualified for FB Platinum in: 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 & 2017 ... that's 10 consecutive years.

And I had sufficient miles carried forward for (almost) 2 more year. So I guess that in his situation, he might also receive the card before April next year.

Just to add another data point:
Qualified platinum in Aug 2007
Last week received platinum for life package
Website shows "platinum", without " x years to go"
And shows at "miles valid until" a nice "-".... No more expiring date

Final information on my side.
Yesterday I have received an email from flying blue telling me that I have re qualified for Platinum and therefore will be platinum till 31 march 2018. No mention of the Platinum for life.
On the website, no changes as well, still Platinum, however information about miles status needed disappeared.
And today, on website my Platinum for life status just showed up!
