Actually I don't really like transiting at GVA because connecting from/to France you need to transfer between the Swiss and French parts which don't even make sense at all since Switzerland is now in Schengen. I also find the signage confusing and have, more than once, ended up exiting where I wanted to transfer but that is probably my fault (still never have this happening anywhere else!). The French part is particularly dreadful and pretty much any shopping/eating/drinking (lounges are not 'eating' places by any standard be it the LX Senator lounge in Swiss part or the AF lounge in French part). I do like flying to/from Geneva on the other hand as the airport is close to the city and well connected, and the city itself is lovely. So at least if connecting from France, not a great place, otherwise it's nice but as you say pretty small anyway. I would rate airports like CPH or VIE higher for connections despite handling higher traffic.

I like GVA very much, except the French side. But I believe that this is getting totally OT.

Sure is mon chčr. Pretty much any airport that allows me the legitimate freedom of choice (in accordance with company travel policy) to avoid Air France impresses the pants off me. Although I do however draw the line at airports like Baghdad International and Burkina Faso Terminal 1 although AF probably has advanced cunning plans to open routes to both of those if it hasn't already....

Like I said, grand frčre AF is watching over you. You wil not be able to escape.

'Consument profiteert van samenwerking KLM en Etihad'

SCHIPHOL - De Nederlandse consument zal profijt hebben van een samenwerking tussen KLM en luchtvaartmaatschappij Etihad Airways uit de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten. Door de hub van Etihad in Abu Dhabi te koppelen aan Schiphol, wordt het aantal keuzemogelijkheden voor passagiers vergroot, constateert SEO Economisch Onderzoek.

KLM-topman Peter Hartman bevestigde deze maand tegenover Luchtvaartnieuws.nl dat Air France-KLM met Etihad in gesprek is over een joint venture. Hoe deze vorm van samenwerking er precies uit komt te zien is nog niet duidelijk. Wel staat vast dat - als de joint venture er komt - de bedrijven op specifieke vluchten hun kracht bundelen om de concurrentie van het sterke Qatar Airways en Emirates tegen te gaan.

Met een zogenoemde codeshare-overeenkomst tussen KLM en Etihad hebben KLM-passagiers in Abu Dhabi de mogelijkheid over te stappen op vluchten van Etihad. Steden in het netwerk van Etihad kunnen op die manier door KLM worden aangeboden als een eigen bestemming. Mocht Etihad besluiten om een route te openen naar Schiphol, dan kunnen passagiers van de Golfmaatschappij overstappen op een toestel van KLM, bijvoorbeeld naar Noord-Amerika.

Veel van de bestemmingen die Etihad kan bieden, worden nu nog niet door KLM onder eigen vluchtcode aangeboden. Het gaat vooral om routes naar India en het Midden-Oosten. Etihad kan KLM-passagiers echter ook doorverbindingen bieden naar Australië. “Hiermee kan het aanbod naar Australië op peil gehouden worden, ook wanneer KLM-codesharepartner Malaysia Airlines op korte termijn toetreedt tot luchtvaartalliantie oneworld”, vermeldt het onderzoek van SEO. KLM en Malaysia hebben aangegeven te willen blijven samenwerken, maar de vraag is of die overeenkomst op termijn standhoudt.

Ook voor de toekomst kan een deal tussen Air France-KLM en Etihad profijtelijk zijn voor reizigers. Etihad heeft bij Airbus en Boeing negentig vliegtuigen in bestelling staan, voornamelijk vliegtuigen voor de lange afstand. Het aantal doorverbindingen dat de maatschappij de komende jaren vanaf Abu Dhabi kan bieden, neemt daardoor waarschijnlijk flink toe. Tegen de kooplust van Emirates en Qatar Airways kan Etihad overigens niet op: zij hebben respectievelijk 220 en 179 vliegtuigen in bestelling.

Ook wat dekking betreft kan Etihad zich niet meten met grote broer Emirates uit Dubai. Etihad biedt slechts acht bestemmingen aan die bij Emirates niet in de dienstregeling staan. Het gaat om Tripoli, Alexandrië, Astana, Almaty, Erbil, Kathmandu, Chengdu en Nagoya. Deze acht bestemmingen zijn echter nu al direct of indirect vanaf Schiphol bereikbaar, zo stelde SEO na onderzoek vast.

Air France-KLM en Etihad lijken door de stormachtige groei van Emirates in elkaars handen te worden gedreven. Voor de passagier hoeft dat in ieder geval geen directe reden tot zorg te zijn. “Een joint venture kan weldegelijk positieve welvaartseffecten voor de BV Nederland met zich meebrengen”, aldus de onderzoekers

I just chanced upon some interesting statistics which illustrate why KLAF have to pursue a if-you-can't-beat-'m-then-join-'m strategy.

Both AF and KL are established players in the SA market. Yet this year the number of arrivals at JNB from DXB will be exceeded only by those from LHR and FRA (only just). The latter cities are of course served by several airlines. At CPT, DXB is in second place after LHR, new kid on the block EK is flying in almost twice as many pax as KL from AMS.

AF/KL, EY, Air Berlin and possibly AZ could form a kind of JV for an extensive partnership. AB would therefore become the strategic German partner who will bring pax from Germany to CDG and AMS. I wonder how long AB will stay in OneWorld...

But getting an extensive partnership, leading to alliance integration, with low-quality AF (low-quality in premium classes where the brand image is mostly made) is not in the cards IMO. There is just too much quality difference.
But AF/KL still offers operational advantages that a growing airline like EY needs; access to a franchise trans-atlantic network, as well as feed for Europe-India and SE Asia. With fuel being high, the strategy of ULH on thin routes might have to be rethought in favor of spoke-hub-hub-spoke, with AUH and CDG filling the roles of hub-hub.

Till the start of the year, EY was offering wonderful deals to Asia, especially in premium cabins.
Suddenly those deals were removed a few months ago, just before the rumor of a partnership with AFKL.
Another sad outcome for competition in the French market which is probably the most expensive origin for premium travel. Might be good for AFKL (and EY) but a significant loss for French pax. One thing that AFKL is good at is stiffling competition. Bad, bad, bad.

Poaching AB would be a great coup for Skyteam. The German market is powerful and this was also the only relatively central European partner for Oneworld right now. Germany, France, and Italy are the three strongest domestic air markets in Europe at the moment and three of the four largest departing markets. AB has now proved for years that it can effectively compete with LH (an unusual fate for Europe's "second domestic airlines" apart for them and Easyjet), comes with Niki in Austria, and has quality service. In fact, I wish AF-KL would let AB take care of their leisure services instead of Transavia as the former would do a far better job of it than the latter...

AB joined OW three months ago, so it would be surprising and costly (for AB) to switch alliance in the near term. But I was surprised to see how big a player AB has become.

AF strategy seems clear. If you cannot compete do a JV and earns part of the profits. AF was very weak (and losing money) to ME and SEA. It finds a way to abandon some money-losing routes while earning some profits.
From a customer viewpoint, this is not good news. The JV will not provide much benefits to French-based customers while fares are going to increase due to the reduction in competition. The TATL JV venture with DL means that they control some 80% of the traffic and mostly set the fares This one with EY, if it flies, will be a bit different as AF will mostly provide feeder traffic on many longhaul destinations. But it wont be good for fares either.

OneWorld is a far looser grouping of airlines than either of the other alliances; many of the member airlines have virtually no interaction apart from extending alliance benefits to frequent flier members of the member airlines; there does not seem to be quite the same amount of restrictions on outside partnerships, etc, as are enforced by Star Alliance, for example.

I'm also therefore not sure if the "penalty" for leaving OneWorld would be as severe as those levied by Star Alliance. The Irish Times today quotes James Hogan as saying that Etihad have already helped Air Berlin towards €100 million in cost savings. If the new EY/AB considers it is better served outside of the alliance (and I'm not convinced that whatever plans EY/AB may have would actually require it to leave the alliance), then I am sure that the potential fine for leaving will be factored into the decision (but would in no way be a "major" factor - they're not going to stick in an alliance they now consider bad for them, just to avoid a (relatively small?) fine).
