Best Option - AF or DL?

Looking to take the family to Paris this summer and cash in some AMEX points.

Option 1: AF, premium economy, nonstop LAX to CDG. - Taxes/surcharge = $2500.00, 315,000 miles total

Option 2: DL, economy, 1 stop, LAX, SLC, CDG - Taxes/surcharge = $500, 450,000 miles total

It sounds like the trip would be more comfortable on the premium economy, nonstop to Paris, and I'd save 135,000 points.

However, 2 grand is 2 grand.

What would you do? Any better options I'm not thinking of?

Thanks,

Rick

Premium Economy on the non-stop is ofcourse far more comfortable. But it's hard to say if it's worth the money. Could you really afford the pay-up?

I would probably value the points difference at around 1.8 grand. In this perspective it's a bargain to upgrade to PremEco by paying 11% more. But of course it depends on what you would do with the left-over points and on whether you have the money.

I would definitely choose the AF non-stop option in Premium Voyageur.

AF surcharges are usually huge, but $2,500 means that you are talking about 5 or more pax. Getting 5 awards on the same flight in premium economy is unlikely.

That's a good point. The PremEco cabin has only about 25 seats, it is unlikely they sell 20% of these as award seats. So you should look for availability first before you think about a question that might not be relevant for practical reasons.

I had the round trip set up and through to the payment screen, so I was able to get the 5 seats each way. We're not traveling until late July, so perhaps that had something to do with it.

I priced out the tickets in $US, and the total was over $12,000 for the 5 of us, so even the $2500 is a good deal, but still, it's definitely not free.

Thank you for the feedback!

Indeed, they seem to open 9 seats (A9) on all flights most days. A bit strange as they open few Biz awards seats. Do not hesitate too long.
