Wow, only a choice of two main courses in intercontinental First Class, especially on a route where other carriers are known to beef up their product, because the competition of Japanese carriers is so strong ?

Did they offer any traditional Japanese dish ?

Especially the dessert and cheese course look shockigly similiar to C...

its the night service - maybe they reduce the offer, I remember that Falco Peregrinus reported something similar in his SIN trip report

That was a supper, not a dinner. I didn't expect more than what is said in the AF website. And What I got was simply astonishing compared to what I had on BA last year (LHR-HGK, First)...

Just compare to what CX,SQ or even Thai would offer on a similar flight, and you wonder :
- Where is the caviar ?
- Where is the Dom Perignon or Grande Dame?
- What about the japanese style menu?
- Only 2 choices for the main is cheap
- The wines offered are nothing special

I hope it was a free upgrade...

Food was more than acceptable, although the CDG-GIG a couple of days earlier was better. My main complaint is about the menu. Could AF not come up with anything more stylish than thish cheapish looking leaflet with a huge one-page advertisement for some world-wide movers to top it off?

How many airlines still serve Dom Pérignon? Certainly not BA (Alfred Gratien Cuvée Paradis) nor LH.
EK, MH and SQ come to mind. My favorite wine shop owner keeps saying that:
- Only 2% of people can make the difference between a 100 € Champagne (Dom Pérignon) and a 50-60 € one (Alfred Gratien Cuvée Paradis, Jacquesson Avize Grand Cru, Lanson Noble Cuvée, Bollinger La Grande Année)
- It's a shame to serve a 100 € Champagne in a pressurized cabin
Air France has the excellent idea to offer various Champagnes in First Class (Jacquesson, Lanson, Bollinger) and not always the same (albeit Alfred Gratien).

The dinner service on this night flight was accelerated, with everything served at once - which I appreciated as I wanted to sleep. Food was OK, nothing spectacular, but not too disappointing either. Slept though breakfast, so I can't tell you about that.

or

My impressions:

No selection of Champagnes (only one offered) but it was very good
The Medoc was excellent, in my limited experience of the grape.

AF FA's did not offer more after the initial glass of any drinks. I was not used to the "French" style of dining. I've since learned that you will be left alone unless you ask for more. It is not offered, as is the norm of US flights

The Duck Foie Gras was served with a tasty salad
The duck confit was very good, definitely worth having again
What can one say about cheese & bread, two staples of life?
Dessert was very disappointing-not much flavor & very dry

Breakfast was basic fare, with fresh fruit, yogurt, pastries & bread.

April 14, 2006 : CDG-BOD, Tempo (but upfront thanks to KLM OLCI)

"Ladies and Gentlemen, we inform you that due to a strike, we will not be able to provide you the usual catering for this flight. Nevertheless, we managed to bring on board enough bootles, therefore we will serve one glass of water per passenger. We kindly apologize etc..."

This is a true story

For the sake of comparison, below is a copy of both the Business (L'Espace Affaires) and First (L'Espace Première) menus. I was seated in Business and was given a First menu by one of the F/As as I looked at one upon exiting the plane. It is interesting to see the commonalities of some dishes (Foie Gras, Monkfish (Plat du Jour), dessert trolley), yet within those there are some subtle receipe differences. I had the monkfish, by the way, and it was excellent (although the reheating could have been more homogeneous - a microwave effect?). As for wines in Affaires, they were good but nothing to write home about -- the kind of wines you can buy for 10-15 euros a bottle in France.

The menu booklet in First is actually smaller than the one in Biz and just as plain. Gone are the days when these articles were little pieces of art . The only "luxury" in First is that you are spared a full-page advertisement on the inner cover.
